Is Tokyo Expensive?
Oct 3, 2005

I think this idea of "Women Only Car" on the train is laughable.  To avoid being molested by men, women better lock themselves up.  Isn't that avoiding the issue rather than tackling it?  I was told Japanese women will not resist when harrassed by a chikan (molester).  It is a change of attitude that is necessary, not segregation.

Velotaxis are three-wheeled pedicabs that run around Omotesando area.  I think this is a great idea to reduce pollution.  Hong Kong should have Velotaxis as a new tourist attraction to replace the ricksaws, which by the way, nobody is interested in any more.

One in five Japanese is above 65 years old.  From 2007, 8 million baby-boomers born between 1947 and 1949 will reach retirement age.  Imagine the burden on the national pension system!  Japanese government is planning to increase salary tax and consumption tax on one hand, and reduce retirement and medical subsidy on the other.

My Language Exchange buddy Naoko took me to a Yatai (street-side food stall) for beer and oden.  It's really fun talking to those ojisan who do not want to go home :)

Japanese could be, on one hand, sophisticated and refined; but on the other hand, unbelievably vulgar and uncivilized.  More than once people coughed or sneezed on my face, without thinking of may be covering their mouths. Today I saw a man peeing in the street in broad daylight, with cars and pedestrians passing by...

Since I came to Tokyo, I started to have many so-called "civilization disease" such as hay fever.  Last year, I got spring hives, which has troubled me for a very long time.  This week, the hives come back!!!  My cheeks are all red and itchy...  woo... woo...

There are over 4 millions "Freeters" (young people who are constantly on part-time jobs) in Japan.   I have first hand information on this phenomenon as most of my female friends here (except for ex-colleagues in Nikkei) are on part-time or temp jobs.   There are worries that many freeters are not contributing to the National Pension (they are supposed to pay a flat rate of about 13,500 yen per month), which will create huge problem to the balance sheet of the Pension Fund.

I was in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year.  The atmosphere was really good.  Everywhere people were talking about property prices, shopping, travelling... kind of reminded me the good time in the mid-90s.
