Is the world REALLY a different place from when the lady first lifted her lamp beside the golden door?

YES, it's a much different place!! I cant believe you asked that question!?

why shouldn't immigrants be proud of where they come from and their heritage?

Being proud of your heritage (family background, etc.) is perfectly normal and healthy.
BUT, if their pround of their country aka the government, the way of life in their home country, etc., then why leave? If their country is a great place that deserves their loyalty and they have a national pride, then why leave? Could it possibly be to take ADVANTAGE of America? Could it be to USE and ABUSE America?
Never wanting to be one of us, only to use us! How many of them refer to themselves Americans?
The people that left England, Ireland, or Europe in general, were trying to get away from oppression, and looking for Freedom of religion. They were glad to leave and were looking forward to the chance to make a new life. The freedom to work, earn, and start a new life. To become Americans!!

People still come here to take part in "the American experience"... to make their lives better... to be Americans...

I'll agree with everything except "to be americans.." - - Maybe one out of 100!!

the face of America may not be as homogenous as it once was but that's not necessarily a bad thing... the fact that a few extremist/terrorists were able to throw a monkey wrench in the works should not change who we are, or why people come here...

A few terrorist?? - -We hav'nt let recent events change who we are or why people come here.
All I'm saying is maybe we should tighten up access.- - Maybe make it a little harder on people with evil intentions.

do we have enemies? yes... are there people who hate us? yes... are there things we can do to help guard against terror and terrorists? yes... but to close our borders as you suggest is to give in to unwarranted xenophobia and is not in our best interest... maybe people will consider it and it will take hold as you suggest.... more likely people will consider it and see it as unworkable... with thousands of miles of borders and more thousands of miles of coastline, how exactly are we supposed to close down and stop everyone from coming in? it's unworkable to the point of being preposterous... in my mind the best "defense" is to continue to strive to make America a more desirable place to be... make citizenship a prize to strive for with real benefits that make people want to come and be a part of the system that makes the country great...

I have a uneducated idea of how large our borders are!! If you think I meant to station someone along every foot of our borders - - - then your being proposperous!! There are ways to keep a closer watch on our main border entry ways. How about the 8000 people that are here right now today (as we write) with expired Visa's?? (the immigration dept. has NO idea where these people are)- - Is it preposterous to think those people shouldn't be here? Or to think our system of border control, should be changed?
By closing our borders I didnt mean perminantly, and I didn't mean taking away peoples right to become citizens. I'm just suggesting that we should tighten up our borders and our immigration system long enough to take a long hard look at our way of doing things - - -aka - change with the times!!

I'm not sure what page you read but here's a couple of links (of mine) for you to check out. Maybe you'll get a better idea of where I'm coming from!! - - - -
