The W&OD Trail

Along the trail immediately west of Leesburg, a property owner granted a scenic easement on twenty-seven acres to the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust. Beginning a few years ago, a new state law allowed tax deductions for granting easements.

One Large Company, One Local Brewery Company Purchased Old Dominion Brewery
According to The Washington Post, in early March, Anheuser Busch and a local brewery (in Annapolis) jointly purchased Old Domininon Brewery, which is located a block off the trail in Ashburn, VA.

Beltway widening could re-route one-half mile of trail. See this site but keep in mind that, once approved, construction is many years away, due to a lack of money.

This is the western intersection of the Cross-County Trail with the W&OD and the Twin Branches Nature Trail. Southbound, the CCT follows the W&OD for less than a mile, then follows the Twin Branches Nature Trail. Note the tan posts with the logo, "CCT," in red.

Llama farm, above, is easily seen from trail at Milepost 39.5 (approximately) just west of Paeonian Springs, on the north side of the trail.

Long Range Plans For Trail A state study suggested extending this trail to meet the Appalachian Trail in the west, constructing a spur trail to White's Ferry north of Leesburg, and constructing a second spur trail from the vicinity of Herndon to the trail along the Potomac River. Mostly this is long-range planning.

Herndon Caboose Needs Repairs

Water has damaged the cupola of the caboose. A representative of a construction company estimated that eight thousand dollars of repairs are needed. Electricity might also be installed.

Semaphore Atop Herndon Station Restored

The Herndon Historical Society received a grant from the Katherine Friant Post Foundation to restore the semaphore, including the cast-iron arms and an electric lantern. Each arm weighs ninety pounds. The original lantern blew off in a storm, so a reproduction was commissioned. Work began in late July, 2006, finished Fall, 2006.
