Hi Richard, I heard about your surgery. I am glad it went well, and I hope you are feeling good and getting stronger. I had some major surgery about 2 years ago on my spine, and I know the recovery is difficult. Not only physically, but emotionally as well. Stay trong and know that you have a lot of people who care about you. And a word of warning: daytime television really sucks so you will need to find some other activity to occupy your time during your recovery. On this, I wish you luck. Richard - Just got the news about your seizure and upcoming surgery. Oh my! You are in my thoughts. I myself have been preoccupied w/ health issues of my father recently. He had a 2nd bypass operation about 2 weeks ago. He's only 73 and this was quite unexpected. They believe he had an attack at the end of the operation. He was supposed to be out of ICU in 2-3 days but has remained for over 2 weeks due to other complications, the most serious of which was a serious, virulent strain of pneumonia. But the recuperative powers of the body are truly amazaing. I was home in OK for a week to visit but had to return. When you're in ICU for this long, it's easy to become disoriented, and he definitely has displayed a mix of being lucid and then incoherent. I'm sure he doesn't remember that I was there. I hope t go back in May or June when's he's better. I moved into a new position at Ford on March 1st as Norm Collins' research assistant. It's the "project on program and information technology." We're gathering together the grants that Ford has made in the last few years w/ some type of IT component and also investigating who the big donors are in this area. We're getting some of them to come to Ford to talk to POs in hopes of getting them to think more about this issue in their grantmaking. It's great cuz the job's a good segue into the IT field, which I've been studying at Columbia since Jan. '98. I'll finish a certificate in database application design/development this August, and this position is for 1 year through the end of next Feb. so the timing should work out rather well. Unless Ford were to offer me something more lucrative and related to what I'm doing now, I'll leave Ford next winter. Besides the career match, I was SO ready to leave grants admin and the Economic Development (ED) Unit, which is a MESS. It was a lateral move (grade 17) but well worth it. In December, OMS had hoped I was going to apply for the grade 19 Grants Administr tor position they had posted in ED, but I really didn't want it. Just didn't make sense. When OMS learned this, they said I would, within the next few months, be moved downstairs to that awful central OMS unit on the 3rd floor to do...um...they weren't uite sure. Then this job was posted, and I said, "wow, someone is watching over me." Well, I've got to go. I'll be thinking of you, Richard. -Rob Oppegard
