MOUNT ROGER'S NATIONAL
RECREATION AREA
& WILDERNESS AREA
Mt. Roger's is the highest peak in Virginia at just over 5000 feet. The hike is approximately 7-8 miles through dense understory of the wilderness area. Although the ascent covers nearly 3000 feet, use of frequent switchbacks makes the hike relatively easy, though long.
Because Mt. Roger's is so high, the vegetation is very unique compared to other Virginia sites. While hiking the trail, you pass through two different forests- a mixed hardwood forest at the lower elevations which changes to evergreen further up. The trees at the top are wind battered and stunted, as seen in the 2nd picture here.
