The “Spirit of Dunlop”
FOR SALE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
World Land Speed Record Holder
This World Land Speed Record Holding “Spirit of Dunlop” is now located in Los Angeles California.
At over 242 mph this U.S. built race car is the fastest vehicle ever on production street tires, shattering the existing world-record by over 45 mph.
In its current set-up the engine delivers 1300 horsepower and 1000 ft/lbs of torque from its state-of –the-art, 585 CI, 8 cylinder engine that runs on methanol at a compression ratio of 15.8 to 1.
After its time in South Africa the car spent some time on display in New Zealand before returning to a private collection in the  U.S . It has only ever run 3 passes before the corporate guys cut further financing for the over 2 million US$ project. A test run as well as the two world-record breaking runs, back and forth.

The vehicle is in immaculate condition considering it has never been run again since is first performance. It’s equipped with state-of-the-art technology offered by renowned drag and speed record race car builder Mark Spitzer, who has built winning vehicles for Bonneville, the Indy 500 and road racecourses. The engine was built by Steve Schmidt, who is famous for building race engines in Indianapolis. The body consists of a bird cage frame and lightweight carbon fiber and fiberglass body shell so that the car weighs in at just over 1600 lbs. It is currently painted in the original Dunlop colors that represent the tread pattern on their SP Sport series tires.

The only damage to the car is only mentioned in the interest of full disclosure and it is very typical of any race car. The lightweight body shell is held to the birdcage frame by over 20 Dzus fasteners all around the car. The car was originally painted with these in place, but undoing and redoing them, the paint has chipped off, as the car was being race-prepped by a professional race team for its record run. This is only noticeable from up close and does not diminish the cars excellent appearance at all. When the body was lifted off the car, two small corners (about 1” on each side) close to the side exhaust tips got cracked as they are very close and can touch the exhaust during dis- and re-assembly. This is also a very minor issue, not visible when installed and does not effect the car’s function in the least.

Current technology racecars like this, ready for competing or modification into a drag car, are not usually offered to the public so soon after their use this very competitive race car or collectible showpiece has been aquired by its new owner in Florida at a small fraction of the $400,000 it cost to build the car (total development costs were over US$ 2,000,000) . The car was sent to New Zealand as a requirement by U.S. customs in order to be able to legally re-import the vehicle to the U.S. .  The trailer in the pictures is also included, but it is for shipping purposes only, obviously not for street use.
