The Prophet said, "Allah has given me superiority over the prophets," or  "has given my people superiority over other peoples and made spoils lawful to us."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said on that day, meaning the day of Hunayn, "He who kills an infidel receives what he takes from him." AbuTalhah killed twenty men that day and received what was taken from them.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade selling booty before it was divided.Tirmidhi transmitted it.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the sale of portions before they were divided.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4017        Narrated byKhawlah, daughter of Qays

She told of hearing Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "This property is fresh and sweet and he who acquires it in a proper way will be blessed in it. But he who improperly acquires such property of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) as his soul wishes will have nothing but Hell on the Day of Resurrection."

Tirmidhi transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4018        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Abbas

The Prophet (peace be upon him) acquired his sword, Dhul-Fiqar, as private booty at the battle of Badr.

Ibn Majah transmitted it, and Tirmidhi added that it was that about which he had the vision at the battle of Uhud.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4023        Narrated byUbadah ibn as-Samit ; Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say, "Hand over threads and needles and avoid dishonesty about booty, for it will be a reproach to those who are guilty of it, on the Day of Resurrection."

Darimi transmitted it, and Nasa'i transmitted on the authority of Amr ibn Shu'ayb who gave it on his father's authority as coming from his grandfather.

In the division of the booty Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to treat ten sheep as equivalent to a camel.

Nasa'i transmitted it.

Uqbah said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) we come to people who do not give us hospitality, or pay what is due to us from them, and we take nothing from them."  He replied, "If they make it necessary for you to take it by force, do so."

I swore allegiance to the Prophet (peace be upon him) along with some women and he said to us, "As far as you are able and are capable."  I said, "Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than we are to ourselves."  I asked Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) to ratify our covenant, meaning to shake hands with us, but he replied, "I say the same to a hundred women as I do to one."

Tirmidhi, Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

They were forbidden game caught by a dog belonging to Magians.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4086        Narrated byAbuTha'labah al-Khushani

AbuTha'labah said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we travel about and when we come to Jews, Christians and Magians we can obtain nothing but their vessels."  He replied, "If you can obtain nothing else, wash them with water and then eat and drink out of them."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade eating the mujaththamah, which is the animal kept as a target for arrows.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4089        Narrated byAl-Irbad ibn Sariyyah

On the day of Khaybar Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade every carnivorous beast which had a fang, every bird which had a claw, the flesh of domestic asses, the mujaththamah, the khalisah, and sexual intercourse with pregnant women till they gave birth to a child.  Muhammad ibn Yahya said that AbuAsim was asked about the mujaththamah and said it meant a bird or something else set up and shot at. He was asked about the khalisah and said it was an animal taken from a wolf or a beast of prey by a man who had caught with on it, but which had died in his hand before he could slaughter it.

Tirmidhi transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4094        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone kills a sparrow or anything greater wrongfully, Allah will question him about killing it." On being asked what was the right way he replied, "To cut its throat and eat it, but not to cut off its head and throw it away."

Ahmad, Nasa'i and Darimi transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4102        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Mughaffal

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Were dogs not a species of creature I should command that they all be killed; but kill every pure black one."

AbuDawud and Darimi transmitted it. Tirmidhi and Nasa'i added, "No family attaches itself to a dog without a qirat of their good deeds being deducted daily, except in the case of a hunting dog, a farm dog, or a sheepdog."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade inciting animals to fight with one another.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4126        Narrated bySafinah

Safinah said, "I ate with Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) the flesh of a bustard."

AbuDawud transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4129        Narrated bySafinah

Referring to the day of Khaybar, Safinah reported that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) declared domestic asses, the flesh of mules, every beast of prey with a fang and every bird with a talon to be unlawful.

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4132        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Two types of animals which have died a natural death and two types of blood have been made allowable to us: the two which die a natural death being the fish and the locust, and the two types of blood being the liver and the spleen."

Ahmad, Ibn Majah and Daraqutni transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4154        Narrated byAli ibn AbuTalib

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) sacrificed a sheep on the seventh day for al-Hasan and said, "Shave his head, Fatimah, and give the weight of his hair in silver as sadaqah." So they weighed it and it amounted to a dirham or part of a dirham.

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition, but its isnad is not fully connected because Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Husayn was not born in the time of Ali ibn AbuTalib.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4205        Narrated byAbuHurayrah ; Sinan ibn Sannah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The one who eats and is grateful is like the one who fasts and shows endurance."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, and Ibn Majah and Darimi transmitted it on the authority of Sinan ibn Sannah.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4211        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Abbas

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was brought a dish containing tharid and said, "Eat from its sides and not from the middle, for the blessing descends in the middle of it."

Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Darimi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan sahih tradition. In AbuDawud's version the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "When one of you eats he must not eat from the top of the dish, but from the bottom, for the blessing descends from the top of it."

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4213        Narrated byAbdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Jaz'

Allah's Messenger was brought some bread and meat when he was in the mosque, and he ate and we ate along with him. He then stood up and prayed and we prayed along with him, doing no more than wiping our hands with pebbles.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was brought some meat, and when the foreleg, which was a part he liked, was offered to him he took a bite of it.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) came in to visit me, accompanied by Ali, when we had some ripening dates hung up.  He began to eat, and Ali along with him, but Allah's Messenger said to Ali, "Stop, Ali, for you are convalescing." I then prepared some beetroot and barley for them and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Take some of this, Ali, for it will be more beneficial for you."

Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) liked what was at the bottom of the pot.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone eats from a dish and licks it, the dish will ask forgiveness for him."

Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Darimi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a gharib tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4221        Narrated byAbuUsayd al-Ansari,

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it comes from a blessed tree."

Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Darimi transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4222        Narrated byUmm Hani

The Prophet (peace be upon him) came in to visit me and asked whether I had anything. When I replied that I had nothing but some dry bread and vinegar he said, "Produce it; a house in which there is vinegar is not devoid of condiments."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4228        Narrated bySalman

When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was questioned about clarified butter, cheese and wild asses, he replied, "What is lawful is what Allah has declared lawful in His Book; what is unlawful is what Allah has declared unlawful in His Book; and what He has said nothing about belongs to the things He ignores."

Ibn Majah and Tirmidhi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a gharib tradition which, according to the soundest opinion, is mawquf.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4233        Narrated byIkrash ibn Dhu'ayb

We were brought a platter with a large amount of tharid and slices of boneless meat and I plunged in my hand in all directions, but Allah's Messenger ate what was in front of him.  He seized my right hand with his left and said, "Eat from one place, Ikrash, for it is all one kind of food." Afterwards we were brought a plate containing various kinds of dates and I began to eat what was in front of me while the hand of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) went round on the plate.  He then said, "Eat where you wish, Ikrash, for it is not all one kind." Next, water was brought to us and when Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) had washed his hands and wiped his face, forearms and head with the moisture on the palms of his hands, he said, "This, Ikrash, is the ablution for what has been changed by fire."

Tirmidhi transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4234        Narrated byAisha

When his family were exhausted by fever Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) ordered some hasa' to be prepared and then ordered them to sip some of it; and he used to say, "It heartens the sad and clears the heart of the invalid as one of you clears dirt away from her face with water."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan sahih tradition.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4235        Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The ajwah dates come from Paradise and contain a cure for poison; truffles are a kind of manna and their juice is a medicine for the eye."

Tirmidhi transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4236        Narrated byAl-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah

I was a guest one night along with Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) and he ordered a haunch to be roasted, then took a broad knife and began to cut off slices for me.  Bilal then came to tell him the time for prayer had come, and he threw down the knife saying, "What is the matter with him ! May his hands be covered with dust!" My moustache was long, so he said, "I shall clip it for you over a tooth-stick," or, "Clip it over a tooth-stick."

Tirmidhi transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4240        Narrated byAnas ibn Malik

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When food is set down take off your sandals, for it gives more rest to your feet."

Darimi transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4241        Narrated byAsma' bint AbuBakr

When she was brought tharid she ordered it to be covered until the force of its steam had gone, saying she had heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him and grant him pace) say it was more effective in producing a blessing.

Darimi transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4248        Narrated byMalik ibn Nadlah al-Jushami

Malik said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) tell me, if I come to a man who gives me no entertainment or hospitality and he afterwards comes to me, shall I give him entertainment or treat him as he treated me?"  He replied, "No, give him entertainment."

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4249        Narrated byAnas ibn Malik

Anas or someone else told that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) asked permission to enter the house of Sa'd ibn Ubadah saying, "Peace and Allah's mercy be upon you." Sa'd replied, "And upon you be peace and Allah's mercy," but did not speak loud enough for the Prophet to hear. He gave the salutation three times and Sa'd responded three times, but did not speak loud enough for him to hear, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) went away. Sa'd went after him and said, "Messenger of Allah, for whom I would give my father and mother as ransom, you did not give a salutation without my hearing it and responding to you, but I did not speak loud enough for you to hear because I wanted to receive many of your salutations and so receive great blessing." They then entered the house and he offered him raisins which Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) ate. Then when he finished he said, "May the righteous eat your food, may the angels invoke blessings on you, and may those who have been fasting break their fast with you!"

It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4252        Narrated byWahshi ibn Harb

The companions of Allah's Messenger said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we eat but are not satisfied."   He suggested that they ate separately, and when they replied that that was so he said, "If you gather together at your food and mention Allah's name you will be blessed for it."

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4253        Narrated byAbuAsib

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) went out during the night and when he passed by me and called to me, I went out to him. He then passed by AbuBakr, and when he called him he came out to him. He then passed by Umar and when he called him he went out to him. He then set off and when he had entered a garden belonging to one of the Ansar he asked the owner of the garden to give us some ripening dates to eat. He brought a bunch and laid it down. When he and his companions had eaten he called for some cold water, after drinking which he said, "You will be questioned about this bounty on the day of resurrection."  Thereupon Umar seized the bunch, and when he had thrown it on the ground so that the ripening dates were scattered towards Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him). He said, "Messenger of Allah, shall we be questioned about this on the Day of Resurrection?" He replied, "Yes, but not for three things: a rag with which a man covers his private parts, or a crumb with which he allays his hunger, or a shelter into which he worms himself to escape heat and cold."

Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4254        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When the cloth is set down a man must not get up till it is removed, nor must he withdraw his hand even if he has had enough till the people have finished, but if he does he should make his excuse, for that embarrasses his companion and he does not stretch out his hand although he may perhaps require the food."

Ibn Majah and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4256        Narrated byAsma', daughter of Yazid

The Prophet was brought some food which he offered to us, and when we said we did not want it he replied, "Do not combine falsehood with hunger."

Ibn Majah transmitted it.

Allah's Messenger said, "Eat together and not separately, for the blessing is associated with the company,"

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4258        Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "It is a part of the sunnah that a man should accompany his guest to the door of the house."

Ibn Majah transmitted it, and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it on the authority both of AbuHurayrah and of Ibn Abbas, but said there is a weakness in its isnad.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4260        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Abbas

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Good comes more quickly to the house in which food is provided than the knife comes to the camel's hump."

Transmitted by Ibn Majah.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4262        Narrated byAbuWaqid al-Laythi

A man said, "Messenger of Allah, we live in a land where we are afflicted by hunger, so when may we eat animals which have died a natural death?"  He replied, "As long as you do not have a morning drink or an evening drink or gather vegetables you may eat them," meaning that when you do not find a morning drink or an evening drink, or find a vegetable to eat, animals which have died a natural death are allowable to you.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4275        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar

In the time of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) we used to eat while walking and drink while standing.

Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Darimi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan sahih gharib tradition.

Abdullah saw Allah's Messenger drink both standing and sitting.

Tirmidhi transmitted it.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4278        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Abbas

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Do not drink without stopping as a camel does, but divide your drink into two or three sections; mention Allah's name when you drink and praise Him when you finish."

Tirmidhi transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4279        Narrated byAbuSa'id al-Khudri

The Prophet (peace be upon him)  forbade blowing into a drink. When a man said he saw specks in the vessel he told him to pour them out, and when he said his thirst was not quenched in one breath he told him to remove the cup from his mouth and take a breath.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4281        Narrated byKabshah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) came in to visit me and drank standing from the mouth of a waterskin which was hung up, whereupon I went and cut off its mouth.

Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan gharib sahih tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4282        Narrated byAisha

Zuhri, on Urwah's authority, told that Aisha said the drink Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) liked best was cold sweet water.

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying the sound version is what was transmitted by Zuhri from the Prophet in mursal form.

The sleeve of Allah's Messenger's shirt reached the wrist.

When Allah's Messenger put on a shirt he began with the right side.

When Allah's Messenger put on a turban he let the end hang between his shoulders.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4340        Narrated byRukanah

The Prophet said, "The difference between us and the polytheists is that we wear turbans over caps."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition whose isnad is not reliable.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4341        Narrated byAbuMusa al-Ash'ari

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Gold and silk are permitted to the females among my people but prohibited to the males."

Tirmidhi and Nasa'i transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan sahih tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4344        Narrated byAisha

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to her, "If you wish to join me, Aisha, be satisfied with worldly things to the extent of a rider's provision, avoid sitting with the rich, and do not consider a garment worn out till you patch it."

Tirmidhi transmitted it saying this is a gharib tradition which he knew only among the traditions of Salih ibn Hasan whose traditions are stated by Muhammad ibn Isma'il to be rejected.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4350        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Allah likes the mark of His favour to be seen on His servant."

Tirmidhi transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4351        Narrated byJabir ibn Abdullah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) came to pay them a visit, and seeing a dishevelled man whose hair was untidy he said, "Could this man not find something to make his hair lie down?" He saw a man wearing dirty clothes and said, "Could this man not find something to wash his garment with?"

Ahmad and Nasa'i transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4352        Narrated byMalik ibn Nadlah al-Jushami

I came to Allah's Messenger wearing a poor garment and he asked me whether I had any property.  When I replied that I had, he asked me what kind it was, and I said, "Every kind; Allah has given me camels, cattle, sheep, horses and slaves."  He then said, "When Allah give you property let the mark of His favour and honour to you be seen."

Ahmad and Nasa'i transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4361        Narrated byAisha

The Prophet (peace be upon him) wore two coarse striped garments, and when he sat and sweated he found them heavy. A certain Jew received a consignment of cloth from Syria, so I suggested he should send to him and buy two garments from him to be paid when circumstances were easier.  He did so, and when the man replied, "I know what you want; all you want is to go off with my property," Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He has lied; he knows I am one of the most pious of them and most accustomed to pay what is given on trust."

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4373        Narrated byAbuMatar

Ali bought a garment for three dirhams, and when he put it on he said, "Praise be to Allah who has provided me with fine clothes with which to adorn myself among men and cover my nakedness." He then said, "Thus did I hear Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say."

Ahmad transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4374        Narrated byUmar ibn al-Khattab

AbuUmamah to that Umar put on a new garment and said, "Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with something with which to cover my nakedness and adorn myself in my lifetime."  He then told that he had heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say that if anyone who put on a new garment said, "Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with something with which to cover my nakedness and adorn myself in my lifetime," then took the old garment and gave it as sadaqah, he would be in Allah's protection, guardianship and shelter both when alive and when dead.

Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a gharib tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4379        Narrated byImran ibn Husayn

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to apply antimony three times in each eye before going to sleep, and reported him as saying, "The best medicines you apply are those sipped at the corners of the mouth, those snuffed up the nose, cupping and purgatives. The best thing you apply to your eyes is antimony, for it clears the sight and makes the hair grow. The best days for cupping are the seventeenth, nineteenth and twenty-first."  When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was taken up to visit Heaven, every company of angels he passed said, "Keep up the practice of cupping."

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "He who believes in Allah and the last day must not enter a bath without a lower garment. So clean (I think he said, your courtyards), and do not imitate the Jews."  I mentioned that to Muhajir ibn Mismar and he said he had been told by Amir ibn Sa'd, on his father's authority, that the Prophet had said something similar, but he said, "Cleanse your courtyards."

When some of the companions of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) remarked to him that truffles were the smallpox of the earth, he replied, "Truffles are a kind of manna, and their juice is a remedy for the evil eye. The ajwah dates come from Paradise, and they are a remedy for poison." AbuHurayrah said that he took three, five, or seven truffles, pressed them, put their juice in a bottle and applied it as an eye-lotion to a slave-girl of his who was bleary-eyed, and she recovered.

Nafi' said Ibn Umar told him he was suffering from high blood pressure and asked him to bring him a cupper, telling him to be sure to bring a young man and see that he brought neither an old man nor a boy.  And Ibn Umar said he had heard Allah's Messenger say, "Cupping before food is best; it increases the intelligence, improves the memory and improves the memory of one who has a good memory. He who has himself cupped should choose Thursday, doing it in the name of Allah Most High; but avoid cupping on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hare yourselves cupped on Monday and Tuesday, but avoid cupping on Wednesday for it is the day when Job was smitten with affliction. Tubercular leprosy and leprosy make their appearance only on Wednesday or Tuesday night."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) took a man who was suffering from tubercular leprosy by the hand, and putting it along with his own in the dish, said, "Eat with confidence in Allah and trust in Him."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him said,, "A believer's vision is a forty-sixth part of prophecy. It flutters over a man as long as he does not talk about it, but when he talks about it it settles." And I think he said, "Talk only to a friend or one with sound judgment."

Tirmidhi transmitted it. In AbuDawud's version he said, "The vision flutters over a man as long as it is not interpreted, but when it is interpreted it settles." And I think he said, "Tell it only to one who loves him or one who has judgment."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was questioned about Waraqah and Khadijah said to him, "He believed in you, but died before you appeared as a prophet."  Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) then said, "I was shown him in a dream, wearing white clothes, and if he had been one of the inhabitants of Hell he would have been wearing different clothing."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "One Muslim should do six acts of kindness to another: he should salute him when he meets him, accept his invitation when he gives one, say 'Allah have mercy on you' when he sneezes, visit him when he is ill, follow his bier when he dies, and like for him what he likes for himself."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) ordered him to learn Syriac.  One version says he ordered him to learn the writing of the Jews, saying, "I do not trust the Jews about what is written." He said he learned it in less than half a month, and then wrote the Prophet's communications to the Jews and read what they had written when they wrote to him.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When Allah created Adam and breathed the spirit into him he sneezed and said, "Praise be to Allah." So he praised Allah by His permission and his Lord said to him, "Allah have mercy on you, Adam. Go to those angels (i.e. a company of them who were seated) and say, 'Peace be upon you'." He said, "Peace be upon you," and they replied, "Upon you be peace and Allah's mercy." Then he returned to his Lord who said, "This is your salutation and the salutation of your descendants to one another." Then Allah said to him, keeping His hands closed, "Choose which of them you wish." He said, "I choose my Lord's right hand, and both of my Lord's hands are Right and Blessed." Then He opened it and it contained Adam and his descendants. He asked, "My Lord, what are these?" He replied, "These are your descendants." Now every man's  period of life was written on his forehead, and among them there was a man who  was the brightest of them (or, one of the brightest of them). He said, "My Lord, who is this?" He replied, "This is your descendant David, and I have  recorded his period of life for him as forty years." He said, "My Lord, increase his life." But He replied, "That is what I have recorded for him." He  said, "My Lord, I have appointed him sixty years of my life." He replied, "That is as you wish." He then lived in Paradise as long as Allah wished,  after which he was sent down from it. Now Adam was reckoning for himself, and  when the angel of death came to him, Adam said to him, "You have come before your time. A thousand years have been recorded for me." He replied, "Certainly, but you appointed sixty years for your descendant David." Then he denied, and his descendants denied; and he forgot, and his descendants forgot. The Prophet said that from that day orders were given that a document be drawn up and witnesses be produced.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4665        Narrated byJabir ibn Abdullah

A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "So and so has a palm-tree in my garden and the presence of his palm-tree has annoyed me." So the Prophet sent to the man to ask him to sell him his palm-tree, but he refused. He asked him to give it to him, but he refused.  Then when he asked him to sell it to him for a palm-tree in Paradise and he still refused, Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "I have seen no one who is more niggardly than you, except one who is niggardly with a salutation."

Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.

I used to visit Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) by night and by day, and when I entered at night he cleared his throat as a sign to me.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Two Muslims will not meet and shake hands without having their sins forgiven them before they separate.

Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it. In AbuDawud's version be said, "When two Muslims meet, shake hands, praise Allah and ask Him for forgiveness they will be forgiven."

A man said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), when a man meets his brother or his friend should he bow to him?"  He replied, 'No." He asked whether he should embrace and kiss him, and he replied, "No." He asked whether he should take his hand and shake it, and he replied, "Yes."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The perfect way for one of you to visit an invalid is for you to put your hand on his forehead or on his hand and ask him how he is; and the perfect way for you to greet one another is to shake hands."

Zayd ibn Harithah came to Medina when Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was in my house. When he came to him and knocked at the door Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) got up and went to him naked, trailing his garment. I swear by Allah that neither before nor after that did I ever see him naked. He then embraced him and kissed him.

Ka'b said to the Prophet (peace be upon him), "Allah has sent down concerning poetry what He has sent down."  The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, "The believer strives with his sword and his tongue. By Him in Whose hand my soul is, it is as though you are shooting at them with it like the spraying of arrows."

It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah. In al-Isti'ab by Ibn AbdulBarr Ka'b said, "Messenger of Allah, what is your opinion about poetry?" and he replied, "The believer strives with his sword and his tongue."

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, Modesty and inability to speak are two branches of faith, but obscenity and eloquence are two branches of hypocrisy."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Those of you who will be dearest to me and nearest to me on the Day of Resurrection will be those with the best characters. Those of you who will be most hateful to me and farthest from me will be those with evil characters, who speak much, are loud-mouthed and talkative."

Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman, and Tirmidhi transmitted something to the same effect on Jabir's authority.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The last hour will not arrive till people come forth who eat with their tongues as cows do."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "On the night when I was taken up to Heaven I passed by people whose lips were being cut by scissors of fire. I asked Gabriel who they were and he told me they were the preachers among my people, who said what they did not do."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.

When the subject of poetry was mentioned to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) he said, "It is speech, and what is good in it is good and what is bad is bad."

Transmitted by Daraqutni. Shafi'i transmitted on Urwah's authority in Mursal form.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4831        Narrated byAnas ibn Malik

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who abandons lying, having been false, will have a castle built for him just within Paradise. He who abandons disputing, having been speaking the truth, will have one built for him in the middle of Paradise. He whose character is good will have one built for him in the highest part of it."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan tradition. The same is said in Sharh as-Sunnah, but in al-Masabih it is called gharib.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4832        Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Do you know the thing which most commonly brings people into Paradise? It is fear of Allah and good character. Do you know what most commonly brings people into Hell? It is the two hollow things: the mouth and the private parts."

Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4833        Narrated byBilal ibn al-Harith

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A man speaks a good word, not realising its worth, for which Allah records for him His good pleasure till the day he meets Him. A man also speaks an evil word not realising its importance for which Allah records for him His displeasure till the day he meets Him."

It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah; and Malik, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted something to the same effect.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who keeps silence will be safe."

Transmitted by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Darimi and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4837        Narrated byUqbah ibn amir

Uqbah met Allah's messenger (peace be upon him) and asked him wherein salvation consisted.  He replied, "Control your tongue, keep to your house, and weep over your sin."

Transmitted by Ahmad and Tirmidhi.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that when a man gets up in the morning, all the limbs humble themselves before the tongue and say, "Fear Allah for our sake, for we are dependent on you; if you are straight we are straight, but if you are crooked we are crooked."

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4839        Narrated byAli ibn al-Husayn ; AbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Part of a man's good observance of Islam is that he leaves alone what does not concern him."

Malik and Ahmad transmitted it; Ibn Majah transmitted it on AbuHurayrah's authority; and Tirmidhi and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, gave it on the authority of both.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4842        Narrated byAnas ibn Malik

When one of the companions died a man said, "Rejoice over his Paradise."  Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Do you say this when you do not know whether he perhaps spoke about what did not concern him, or was niggardly about something which would cause him no loss?"

Transmitted by Tirmidhi.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4843        Narrated bySufyan ibn Abdullah ath-Thaqafi

When Sufyan asked Allah's messenger (peace be upon him) what he feared most for him, he took hold of his own tongue and said, "This."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying it is sahih.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When a man lies, the angel moves a mile from him because of the bad odour of what he has produced."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who is two-faced in this world will have two tongues of fire on the Day of Resurrection."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A believer is not given to accusing others or to cursing them, nor is he immoral or shameless."

Tirmidhi and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it. Another version by Bayhaqi has "Nor immoral and shameless." Tirmidhi said this is a gharib tradition.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The believer is not given to cursing."  One version says "It is not fitting for a believer to be given to cursing."

Transmitted by Tirmidhi.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4853        Narrated byAisha

Aisha said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): "It is enough for you in Safiyyah that she is such and such," meaning that she was short. He replied, "You have said a word which would change the sea if it were mixed in it."

Ahmad, Tirmidhi and AbuDawud transmitted it.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Coarse talk does not come into anything without disgracing it, and modesty does not come into anything without adorning it."

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4855        Narrated byKhalid ibn Ma'dan

Mu'adh reported Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying, "If anyone reviles his brother for a sin he will not die before committing it himself,: meaning any sin of which he has repented.

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition whose isnad is not fully connected, because Khalid was not alive in the lifetime of Mu'adh ibn Jabal.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Do not display pleasure at your brother's misfortune and so have Allah showing mercy to him and bringing misfortune to you."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "I do not like to speak of anyone's faults even if I should receive such and such."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When a reprobate is praised the Lord most high is angry, and the Throne shakes on account of it."

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4860        Narrated byAbuUmamah ; Sa'd ibn AbuWaqqas

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A believer is stamped with all the characteristics except treachery and falsehood."

Ahmad transmitted it, and in Shu'ab al-Iman Bayhaqi transmitted it on the authority of Sa'd ibn AbuWaqqas.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4869        Narrated byAbuBakr as-Siddiq

One day when Umar went in to visit AbuBakr as-Siddiq and found him pulling his tongue, he said, "Stop! Allah forgive you!"  AbuBakr replied to him, "This has brought me down to dangerous places."

Malik transmitted it in al-Muwatta.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4870        Narrated byUbadah ibn as-Samit

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "If you guarantee me six things on your part I shall guarantee you Paradise. Speak the truth when you talk, keep a promise when you make it, when you are trusted with something fulfil your trust, avoid sexual immorality, lower your eyes, and restrain your hands from injustice."

Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4871        Narrated byAbdurRahman ibn Ghanam, and Asma', daughter of Yazid

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The best servants of Allah are those who, when they are seen, cause Allah to be remembered. The worst servants of Allah are those who go about slandering, who separate friends, and seek to distress the upright."

Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4879        Narrated byAbuJuhayfah

I saw Allah's Messenger (may peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) as a fair-skinned man who had become grey-haired. Al-Hasan ibn Ali resembled him. He ordered that thirteen young she-camels should be given us and we went to receive them, but news of his death reached us before they had given us anything.  Then when AbuBakr became caliph he said, "If anyone has received a promise from Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) let him come." So I got up, went to him and told him, and he ordered that they be given us.

Transmitted by Tirmidhi.

When they said, "Messenger of Allah, do you make jokes with us!" he replied, "I say nothing but the truth."

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4889        Narrated byAnas ibn Malik

A man from the desert, called Zahir ibn Haram, used to bring presents to the Prophet (peace be upon him) from the desert, and Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) would prepare for him what he needed when he intended to depart. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Zahir is our desert man and we are his townsmen."  Now the Prophet (peace be upon him) liked him, but he was an ugly man. One day the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to him when he was selling his goods and embraced him from behind. He could not see who it was, so he said, "Let me go. Who is this?" When he turned round and recognized the Prophet (peace be upon him) he remained with his back close against the Prophet's chest. Then when he began to say, "Who will buy the slave?" he said, "Messenger of Allah, you will then find me to be worthless goods, I swear by Allah." The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, "But in Allah's sight you are not worthless goods."

It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4892        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Abbas

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Don't dispute with your brother; don't make jokes with him; and don't make him a promise which you break."

Tirmidhi transmitted, saying this a gharib tradition.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Pride in ancestry is property, but generosity is piety."

Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4909        Narrated byWathilah ibn al-Asqa'

I questioned Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as follows, "Messenger of Allah, does a men's love of his people indicate party-spirit (Asabiyyah)?"  He replied, "No, but when a man helps his people in wrongdoing it indicates party-spirit."

Ahmad and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4910        Narrated byUqbah ibn Amir

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "These genealogies of yours are not a cause of reviling anyone. You are all sons of Adam, just as one sa' is near another when you have not filled it.  No one has superiority over another except in religion and piety. It is enough reproach for a man to be foul, obscene and niggardly."

Ahmad, and Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman.

Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: "Only supplication averts the decree, only kindness prolongs life, and a man is deprived of provision for a fault he commits."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The Lord's good pleasure results from a father's good pleasure, and the Lord's displeasure results from a father's displeasure."

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4928        Narrated byAbudDarda

When a man came to him and said, "I have a wife whom my mother commands me to divorce," he replied to him that he had heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "A parent is the best of the gates of Paradise; so if you wish, keep to the gate, or lose it."

Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4933        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Amr

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who casts up the favours he has done, he who is disobedient to parents, and he who is addicted to wine will not enter Paradise."

Nasa'i and Darimi transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4934        Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Learn enough of your genealogies to show what ties of relationship you should join, for joining ties of relationship is a means of producing love in a family, increasing wealth and producing life."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4935        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar

A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have committed a serious sin. Can I do any act of penitence?" He asked him if he had a mother, and when he replied that he had not, he asked if he had a maternal aunt.  On his replying that he had, he said, "Then do kindness to her."

Transmitted by Tirmidhi.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4939        Narrated byMu'awiyah ibn Jahimah

Jahimah came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "Messenger of Allah, I desire to go on a military expedition and I have come to consult you.  He asked him if he had a mother, and when he replied that he had, he said, "Stay with her, for Paradise is at her feet."

Ahmad, Nasa'i and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4940        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar

I had a wife whom I loved but whom Umar disliked. He told me to divorce her and when I refused, Umar went to Allah's Messenger and mentioned the matter to him. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) then told me to divorce her.

Tirmidhi and AbuDawud transmitted it.

A man said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) what rights can parents demand from their children?"  He replied, "They are your Paradise and your Hell."

AbuHurayrah heard AbulQasim (peace be upon him) who spoke the truth and whose word was verified say, "Mercy is taken away only from him who is miserable."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He does not belong to us who does not show mercy to our young ones and respect to our old ones, who does not recommend what is reputable and prohibit what is disreputable."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "No youth will honour an old man because of his years without Allah appointing one to honour him when he is old."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The best house among the Muslims is one which contains an orphan who is well treated, and the worst house among the Muslims is one which contains an orphan who is badly treated."

Transmitted by Ibn Majah.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4974        Narrated byAbuUmamah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone strokes an orphan's head, doing so only for Allah's sake, he will have blessings for every hair over which his hand passes; and if anyone treats well an orphan girl or boy under his care, he and I shall be like these two in Paradise," putting two of his fingers together.

Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a gharib tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4976        Narrated byJabir ibn Samurah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "It is better for a man to discipline his son than to give a sa' as sadaqah."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition and that Nasih the transmitter is not held by traditionists to be strong.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4977        Narrated byAmr ibn Sa'id or Sa'id ibn al-'As

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A father gives his son nothing better than a good education."

Tirmidhi and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying that in his opinion this is a mursal tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4984        Narrated byUqbah ibn Amir

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who sees something which should be kept hidden and conceals it, will be like one who has brought to life a girl buried alive."

Ahmad and Tirmidhi, who called it sahih, transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4985        Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Each of you is the mirror of his brother, so if he sees any fault in him he should wipe it away from him." Another version has, "The believer is believer's mirror and the believer is the believer's brother who guards him against loss and protects him when he is absent."

Tirmidhi transmitted it, but called it weak.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4987        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Amr

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The best companion in Allah's estimation is the one who is best to his companion, and the best neighbour in Allah's estimation is the one who is best to his neighbour."

Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4988        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Mas'ud

A man said to the Prophet, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), how can I know when I do well and when I do ill?"  The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, "When you hear your neighbours say you have done well, you have done well; and when you hear them say you have done ill, you have done ill."

Ibn Majah transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4990        Narrated byAbdurRahman ibn AbuQurad

The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ablution one day and his companion began to wipe themselves with the water he had used.  The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them what induced them to do that, and when they replied that it was love for Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) he said, "If anyone is pleased to love Allah and His Messenger, (peace be upon him) or rather to have Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) love him, he should speak the truth when he tells anything, fulfil his trust when he is put in a position of trust, and be a good neighbour."

Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4992        Narrated byAbuHurayrah

A man said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), such and such a woman has a reputation for engaging to a great extent in prayer, fasting and almsgiving but she annoys her neighbours with her tongue."  He replied, "She will go to Hell."  He said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), such and such a woman has a reputation for engaging to a small extent in fasting, almsgiving and prayer, but she gives pieces of curd as sadaqah and does not annoy her neighbours with her tongue." He replied, "She will go to Paradise."

Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4993        Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) stood beside some people who were seated and said, "Would you like me to distinguish for you between the best of you and the worst of you?" They made no reply, so he said that three times.  A man then said, "Certainly, Messenger of Allah, distinguish for us between the best of us and the worst of us."  So he said, "The best of you is he in whose good hopes are placed and from whose evil people are safe, but the worst of you is he in whose good hopes are not placed and from whose evil people are not safe."

Tirmidhi and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan sahih tradition.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4994        Narrated byAbdullah ibn Mas'ud

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Allah Most High has allotted you your characters just as He has allotted you your provisions. Allah Most High gives worldly things to those whom He loves and those whom He does not love, but He gives religion only to those whom He loves, so he who is given religion by Allah has been loved by Him. By Him in Whose hand my soul is, a man is not a Muslim till his heart and tongue are submissive, and he is not a believer till his neighbour is safe from injurious behaviour on his part."

Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 4995        Narrated byAbuHurayrah

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "A believer is friendly, and there is no good in one who is neither friendly nor is treated in a friendly way."

Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 5000        Narrated byUqbah ibn Amir

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The first pair of adversaries on the Day of Resurrection will be two neighbours."
