The Prophet (peace be upon him) had to suffer from starvation for several nights consecutively. His family members did not have even their evening meals, (that is the last meal of the day) and generally their fare used to be barley bread.

(Sometimes) when the Prophet (peace be upon him) led the prayer some people belonging to the group of the Companions of Suffah fell down from their standing posture on account of the (extreme weakness due to the) intensity of hunger. The villagers used to say that they were insane. After concluding the prayer, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would go to them and say: If you could know what is there for you with Allah, the Exalted, you would like to have the pangs of your starvation and lack of provision increased.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 516          Narrated byAbuKarimah Miqdad ibn Ma'dikarib

AbuKarimah heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: No man fills a pot worse than his stomach. For a person a few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his back straight. But if he wants to fill his stomach then he should divide his stomach into three parts: He should fill one third of the belly with food, another third with drink and leave one third empty for easy breathing.

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) granted a concession for the traveller for three days and three nights and for the resident one day and one night for wiping over them after he had washed (his feet) and then put on socks.

Al-Athram transmitted it in his Sunan, Ibn Khuzaymah and Daraqutni also transmitted it, Al-Khattabi said: This chain of transmission is sound and the same is said in Al-Muntaqa.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) commanded us that when we were travelling we should not take off shoes for three days and three nights except in case of seminal emission and not to do so because of easing ourselves, urinating or sleeping.

It is reported that Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: (The Kaffarah for having intercourse with menstruating women) is one dinar if the blood is completely red and half a dinar when the blood is (somewhat) yellow.

Once they slaughtered a goat (and distributed most of its meat). Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: What is left now? Aisha answered: Nothing except a shank. He remarked: (In fact) all of it is saved except the shank.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Observe your five (daily) prayers, observe the fast during your month (Ramadan), pay zakat on your properties, and obey when you are commanded (by one who has the right to issue you a command); you will then enter the Paradise of the Lord.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The covenant that is between us and them is (on the basis of) prayer, so he who (abandons it, in fact shows) infidelity (to Allah).

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) went out in winter when the leaves were falling. He took hold of two twigs of a tree and said: That is a twig, the leaves of which have fallen. He said: AbuDharr! I said: Labbayk! O Allah's Messenger. He said: Verily, when a believing servant of Allah observes the prayer seeking, only His pleasure, his sins fall from him just as the leaves have fallen from the tree.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He who maks two prostrations (prays two rak'ahs) without any mistake in them, Allah will forgive his previous sins.

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) mentioned prayer one day and said: He who observes it constantly, it will serve for him as a light, as (burhan), an evidence, and (as a means of) salvation on the Day of Resurrection. He who does not observe it constantly, it will not serve for him as a light, as an evidence, and (as a means of) salvation on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be with Qarun, Pharaoh, Haman and Ubayy ibn Khalaf.

When a third of the night had passed the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to get up and call out: 'O people, remember Allah; the first call (of the trumpet of Angel Israfil) has sounded; after this comes the second call. It is accompanied by death, and all that it comprise.' I said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): 'O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) I invoke Allah's peace and blessings upon you copiously; how much time should I earmark for this?' He said: 'As much time as you think proper.' I submitted: 'A quarter of my time?' He said: 'As much you wish; but it would be better for you, if you could devote more time.' I said: 'Half of my time?' He said: 'Whatever you  wish; but it would be (still) better for you, if you were to increase it.' Then I said: 'Two-third of my time?' He said: 'As much you wish; but it would be (still) better for you if you were to increase it.' I said: 'Shall I devote all my time (supplications) to reciting Salat (benediction) on you? He said: 'Then it will take care of all your worries and your sins will be forgiven.'

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 580          Narrated byAbudDarda'

My friend (the Prophet) instructed me: Don't associate anything with Allah even though you are cut into pieces and burnt and don't abandon the obligatory prayer intentionally, for he who abandon the obligatory prayer intentionally protection (guaranteed to him) because of his being a Muslim will be withdrawn (from him) and don't drink wine for it is the key to every evil.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) once passed by some graves in Medina. Facing towards them, he said: "Peace be on you, O dwellers of the graves! May Allah forgive you and us. You have preceded us, and we shall follow you.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the things which would enable most people to enter Paradise. He answered: Being careful about one's obligations to Allah, and good behaviour. Thereafter, he was asked: What are those things which will lead a person into Hell? He answered: His mouth and genitals.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: On the Day of Judgment the dearest and closest to me, as regards my company, will be those persons who will bear the best moral character. Those among you, who talk with affectation and are given to boasting, will be the most repugnant to me and farthest from me on the Day of Judgment. The Companions submitted: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by the word "Mutafayhiqun"? The Prophet said: Those given to boasting.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to Bilal: When you pronounce the Adhan make the pronouncement in a leisurely manner and when you pronounce the Iqamah proceed quickly. Leave between your Adhan and Iqamah enough time in which one who is eating can finish his food and one who is drinking can have his drink, and one who needs to relieve oneself may do so, and don't get up (for performing Iqamah) till you see me (ready for prayer).

Transmitted by Tirmidhi, and he said: We know it only from the hadith of AbdulMun'im and its chain of transmission is not known.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 653          Narrated bySa'd al-Qurdh, Mu'adhdhin of The Messenger of Allah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) commanded Bilal that he should place his fingers in his ears and said: It makes the voice louder.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Three persons will be on the hillock of musk on the Day of Resurrection: The slave who performs the duties that he owes to Allah and the duties that he owes to his master, the person who leads the people in prayer and they are well pleased with him, and the person who calls people to five prayers every day and night.

I was in the company of Mu'awiyah when his Mu'adhdhin announced Adhan and Mu'awiyah repeated that which his Mu'adhdhin had uttered till he uttered `hasten to the prayer', he (Mu'awiyah) said, `there is no might and no power by that of Allah'; and when he pronounced, `hasten to success', he said `there is no might or power but that of Allah, the Exalted and Mighty' and he repeated that which Mu'adhdhin had uttered. Then said: I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say that.

We were with Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) when Bilal got up to announce the Adhan and as he fell silent (having finished that) Allah's Messenger said: He who utters the (words) like these with conviction, will enter Paradise.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He who pronounces the Adhan for twelve years is assured of Paradise and sixty merits are recorded for him every day for (every) Adhan and thirty merits for every Iqamah.

We went as a deputation to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) and took the oath of allegiance to him, observed prayer with him and informed him that there was a cloister (church) for us in our land. We requested him to confer upon us the water left after his ablution. He called for water, performed ablution, rinsed his mouth, poured the water for us into a second vessel, and then commanded us: Now depart and when you come to your land demolish the cloister, wash its place with this water and use it as a mosque. We said: The land is far off and the heat is scorching, so water will dry up. Whereupon he said: Increase it (by adding to it) more water and it will not add to it but blessings.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 717          Narrated byAnas ibn Malik

A man approached the Prophet (peace be upon him) and requested: O Messenger of Allah! I am intending to go out on a journey, kindly grant me some provisions (i.e. pray for me). He said: "May Allah grant you the provision of righteousness." The man submitted: Some more good wishes. He said: And may He forgive your sins. The man again requested: Please add something more. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: And may He make it easy for you to do virtuous deeds, wherever you may be.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 723          Narrated byAbuSa'id al-Khudri

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When you see a person coming to the mosque frequently, bear witness to his faith, for Allah says: `Only who affirms his faith in Allah and the Last Day, can maintain the mosques of Allah. (9:18)

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 725          Narrated byAbdurRahman ibn A'ish

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: I saw my Lord, the Exalted and Glorious in the most beautiful form. He said: What do the Angels in the presence of Allah contend about? I said: Thou art the most aware of it. He then placed his palm between my shoulders and I felt its coldness in my chest and I came to know what was in the Heavens and the Earth. He recited: `Thus did we show Ibrahim the kingdom of the Heavens and the Earth and it was so that he might have certainty.' (6:75)

Darimi reported it in a mursal form and Tirmidhi also reported.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 729          Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: As you happen to pass by the `gardens of Paradise', relish their fruits. It was said: Allah's Messenger, what are the gardens of Paradise. He said: Mosques. It was again said: Allah's Messenger, what is meant by relishing fruits? Thereupon he said (reciting): Hallowed is Allah; all praise is due to Allah; there is no god but Allah; Allah is the Greatest.

Transmitted by Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan gharib hadith.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 731          Narrated byFatimah az-Zahra'

When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) entered the mosque, he invoked blessings and peace for himself and then used to say: My Lord, pardon me of my faults and open for me the gates of Thy mercy. As he went out of the mosque he would supplicate for  blessings and peace for Muhammad (himself) and say: My Lord, pardon me of my  faults and open for me the doors of Thy favour. In the version of Ahmad and Ibn Majah (the words are): She said: As he entered the mosque and as he came out he used to say: In the name of Allah and a blessing of peace upon the Messenger of Allah instead of praying for the blessings and safety for Muhammad himself.

Transmitted by Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and Tirmidhi who said that its Isnad is not well linked and Fatimah daughter of Husayn could not see Fatimah the elder.

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 733          Narrated byAisha

(Once) the Prophet (peace be upon him) was eating in the company of six of his companions, when a villager joined them and ate up the food in two mouthfuls. On seeing this the Prophet (peace be upon him) remarked: If he had taken the name of Allah, the same would have sufficed for all of you.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, When you see someone entering into transactions in the mosque you should say: May your transaction not prove to be profitable. And when you see anyone calling out in it about something lost, you should say: May Allah not restore it to you.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 738          Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) prohibited the observance of prayers in seven places: on a dung hill, in a slaughterhouse, in a graveyard, in the middle of the road, in a bathroom, in the watering place where camels drink and sit, and upon the roof of the House of Allah.

I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: He who comes to this mosque of mine and he comes only to learn or teach a khayr (good, i.e. the Qur'an and the Sunnah), his status is like that of one who strives in the cause of Allah. He who comes for any other motive, his status is like that of a person who covets the property of another.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 748          Narrated byMu'adh ibn Jabal

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was detained one morning from observing the dawn prayer (in congregation) along with us till the sun had almost appeared on the horizon. He then came out hurriedly and Iqamah for prayer was observed and he conducted it (prayer) in brief form. When he had concluded the prayer by saying As-salamu alaykum wa Rahmatullah, he called out to us saying: Remain in your places as you were. Then turning to us he said: I am going to tell you what detained me from you (on account of which I could not join you in the prayer) in the morning. I got up in the night and performed ablution and observed the prayer as had been ordained for me. I dozed in my prayer till I was overcome by (sleep) and lo, I found myself in the presence of my Lord, the Blessed and the Glorious, in the best form. He said: Muhammad! I said: At Thy service, my Lord. He said: What these highest angels contend about? I said: I do not know. He repeated it thrice. He said: Then I saw Him put His Palms between my shoulder blades till I felt the coldness of His fingers between the two sides of my chest. Then everything was illuminated for me and I could recognize everything. He said: Muhammad! I said: At Thy service, my Lord. He said: What do these high angels contend about? I said: In regard to expiations. He said: What are these? I said: Going on foot to join congregational prayers, sitting in the mosques after the prayers, performing ablution well despite difficulties. He again said: Then what do they contend? I said: In regard to the ranks. He said: What are these? I said: Providing of food, speaking gently, observing the prayer when the people are asleep. He again said to me: Beg  (Your Lord) and say: O Allah, I beg of Thee (power) to do good deeds, and  abandon abominable deeds, to love the poor, that Thou forgive me and show  mercy to me and when Thou intendst to put people to trial Thou causes me to die unblemished and I beg of Thee Thy love and the love of one who loves Thee and the love for the deed which brings me near to Thy love. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: It is a truth, so learn it and teach it.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) liked to pray in enclosures. Some of the transmitters explained enclosures as gardens.

Tirmidhi transmitted it and he said: This is a gharib hadith. We do not know it but from the narration transmitted to us by Hasan ibn AbuJa'far, Yahya ibn Sa'id and others deemed it as a weak tradition.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The prayer of a person in his house is a single prayer; his prayer in the mosque of his tribe has the reward of twenty-five prayers; his prayers in the mosque in which the Friday prayer is observed has the reward of five hundred; his prayer in the mosque of Aqsa (i.e. Bayt al-Maqdis) has a reward of fifty thousand prayers; his prayer in my mosque (the Prophet's mosque in Medina) has a reward of fifty thousand prayers; and the prayer in the Sacred Mosque (Ka'bah) at Makkah has a reward of one hundred thousand prayers.

Anyone who does not do that is such and such. In another version the words are: That (prayer) is imperfect.

When Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) commenced the prayer he recited: Allah is the Greatest; then said: Verily my prayer, my sacrifices, my life and my death are for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. There is no associate of His; and this is what I have been directed to and I am the first amongst the Muslims. O Allah, direct me to the good deeds and to the good morals. None directs to the good but Thou only. Save me from the evil of the deeds and from the evil of the morals and there is none to save me from their evil but Thou only.

When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) got up for the Nafl prayer, he said: Allah is the Greatest, I turn my face to One Who is the Creator of the heavens and of the earth, with single minded devotion, and I am not amongst the polytheists. (Then Muhammad narrated the hadith like that of Jabir (No. 820), except that he said: I am of the Muslims. Then he said: O Allah, Thou art the Sovereign; there is no god but Thou. Hallowed be Thou and praise is due to Thee. He then recited (some portion of the Qur'an)).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If a person joins a company in which fruitless talking takes place and if that person before leaving the gathering prays, "O Allah! Holy art Thou, and all praise is for Thee; I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship save Thyself; I ask for Thy forgiveness and turn to Thee". Such a person is forgiven for his participation in such a company.

It was rare that the Prophet (peace be upon him) departed from a company without praying in these words: 'O Allah! grant us so much (Thy) fear that it may serve as a barrier between us and our sins; and bestow upon us Thy obedience that it may help us to reach Thy Paradise; and grant us so much faith that it may help us to face the misfortunes of this world easily. O Allah! bless us to benefit from our powers of hearing and seeing and vigour so long as Thou dost grant us life and make our heirs (beneficiaries) of them; and afflict with our rancour those who oppress us, and  help us against those who are our enemies; do not entangle us in the difficulties of our religion; and do not make the world our main object, and the extent our knowledge; and do not appoint over us persons who will not show mercy to us.'

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A gathering in which there is no mention of Allah, the Exalted and High, nor any invoking of blessings (salat) for their Prophet (peace be upon him) will be afflicted with remorse. If Allah wills He might punish them and if He wills He might forgive them.

Sulayman ibn Yasar said: AbuHurayrah said: Never did I observe the prayer behind anyone whose prayer more closely resembled the prayer of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) than so and so. Sulayman said: I observed the prayer behind him: he prolonged the first two rak'ahs of the Zuhr and shortened the last two; he shortened (the rak'ahs of) the afternoon prayer, and he recited in the sunset prayer the short surahs from al-Mufassal; he recited the medium surahs from al-Mufassal in the night prayer and the long ones from al-Mufassal in the dawn prayer.

When I came to these words: `Then which of the favours of your Lord do you deny?' They said: Our Lord, there is nothing that we deny of Thy favour; to Thee is praise due.

A Jew asked his companion to take him to the Prophet (peace be upon him). When they met him, they inquired of him about the nine clear signs (given to Moses); this was followed by the recital of the relevant Hadith. This made the issue quite clear. In the end both of them kissed his hands and feet and said: We bear witness that you are indeed a Prophet.

Peace be upon Thee, O Apostle, and Mercy of Allah and His blessings; let there be peace upon us and upon the pious servants of Allah. I testify that there is no god but Allah and I also testify that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger; I beg of Allah Paradise and seek refuge with Allah from the Hell-fire.'

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 917          Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar

As Abdullah ibn Umar sat during the prayer, he placed his hands upon his knees and pointed with his finger (the Oneness of Allah) and cast a full glance towards it. Then reported that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: It has a more terrible effect upon Satan than even that of iron i.e. the effect of (attesting the Oneness of Allah) with the help of the forefinger.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When a child of a servant of Allah dies, Allah inquires His angels: Have you taken into custody the soul of the child of My servant? They answer: Yes. Then He inquires: Have you taken into custody the soul of the flower of his heart? They answer: Yes. Then He inquires: Then what did My servant say? They answer: He praised Thee and affirmed: To Allah we belong and to Him we shall and return. Thereupon Allah says: Build for My servant a mansion in Paradise and name it `The House of Praise.'

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Let there be smeared with dust the nose of the person in whose presence I am mentioned, and he does not invoke blessing upon me. And let the nose of that person be smeared with dust who has the opportunity to see the month of Ramadan and it comes to an end without his securing pardon for himself. And let the nose of the person be smeared with dust who finds alive his aged parents, both of them or one of them, and through them (by serving them) he does not enter Paradise.

I said: May it be two thirds? He said: As much as you like but if you make an increase in it, it will be better. I said: May I devote the whole of my supplication to you (that I make in my prayer)? Thereupon he said: In that case it will take care of you and your sins would be expiated.

I was busy praying, while Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) was there with AbuBakr and Umar. Thereupon Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Beg and it will be conferred upon you, beg and it will be conferred upon you.

He prolonged his prostration so much that I feared that Allah might have taken his (worldly) life. I went nearby to assure myself. He raised his head and said: What is the matter with you? I mentioned (my fear) to him and he said: Gabriel said to me: May I not give you the glad tidings that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, says about you that he who invokes blessings upon you (the Prophet), I shall send blessings upon him and he who sends you the greetings of peace, I shall send greetings of peace to him.

We were commanded that we should glorify Allah at the end of every prayer thirty-three times; extol him thirty-three times; recite His greatness thirty-three times. Someone from Ansar saw in a dream that it was said to him: Has Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) commanded you to glorify Allah at the end of every prayer such and such time. The Ansari said in the dream: Yes. Whereupon he said: Observe it twenty-five times, twenty-five times and add to it tahlil (there is no god but Allah). When it was morning he came to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) and informed him of this. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Well, do so.

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: He who recites ten times before getting up (from the place of worship) and bending his steps back from the sunset and the dawn prayers: "There is no god but Allah, the One, having no partner with Him, to Him belongs sovereignty and to Him is praise due; in His hand is the good; He gives life and causes death; and He is Potent over everything," for him are recorded for every recital ten good deeds and ten of his sins are obliterated and he is increased ten ranks. He is safeguarded against every unpleasantness, he is safeguarded against Satan, the accursed, and no sin destroys him except associating anything with Allah and he will be the most  excellent amongst men in regard to good deeds except the person who excels him in uttering something more excellent than that which he has uttered.

Transmitted by Ahmad and Tirmidhi. Tirmidhi's version ends at `...associating with Allah..' and Maghrib is not mentioned nor is the word `..in His hand is good..'. Tirmidhi commented: This is a hasan sahih gharib hadith.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 977          Narrated byUmar ibn al-Khattab

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) sent a detachment towards Najd. There fell many spoils of war to its lot and it came back quickly. Someone amongst us who had not set out (with this detachment) said: We have never seen a detachment coming back so quickly and with so much spoils of war as this detachment. Thereupon Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: May I not inform you of people with more spoils of war and better return? Those who participate in the dawn prayer and then sit down to remember Allah till the sunrise, are the ones whose return is quicker and spoils more excellent.

Tirmidhi transmitted it and said: This is a gharib hadith and Hammad ibn AbuHumayd is weak as a transmitter of hadith.

 

 

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 982          Narrated byAbuHurayrah

A person said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): Messenger of Allah, I intend to proceed on a journey; will you advise me? He told him: Adhere to righteousness, and whenever you climb a hill proclaim: `Allah is Great.' When the man turned to go, the Prophet (peace be upon him) supplicated: Allah, shorten up the distance for him and make his journey easy for him.

I asked Bilal: How did Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) respond to them as they greeted him while he was in prayer? Thereupon he said: He only made a gesture with his hands (in order to respond to the greeting).

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 993          Narrated byAbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, Yawning in prayer is an act of Shaytan, so when one of you yawns he should restrain it as much as possible. In another version it the word are: He should place his hand upon his mouth.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 997          Narrated byAnas ibn Malik

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to him: My son, be on your guard against looking aside while engaged in prayer, for looking aside in prayer is disastrous, but if there is no help for it then do it in supererogatory (Nafl) prayer, but not in obligatory prayer.

 Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 1000        Narrated byAbdullah ibn ash-Shikhkhir

I came to Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) as he was engaged in prayer and I heard a sound within him like the gurgling of a pot, meaning that he was weeping. In another version he said: I saw Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) engaged in prayer and (heard) a sound from his breast like the rumbling of a mill, owing to his weeping.

Transmitted by Ahmad, Nasa'i transmitted the first version and AbuDawud the second one.
