"This volume contains more than 100 000 reference entries, which, being
gathered in a strict connection of references into one single entry actually
amounts to 110 000 entries. These references have only be obtained from
Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period texts. Roughly estimated,
70 % of all published texts belonging to the period and 80 % of all
relevant references have been treated.

After an approximate subdivision into periods of time, the references have
not been ordered chronologically, but topographically... In order to
determine the geographical horizon of a word, again symbols will indicate
the appurtenance of a source to its nome. So therefore every entry begins
with the symbol of its topographical indication, enclosed, for means of
clearness, within a small square, which also makes the numeration and
subdivision easier.
In this way, the symbol | M26, 1 | [M26 Sma] means, that the source
originates from the First Upper Egyptian nome, whereas the First Lower
Egyptian nome is designated by the symbol | M16, 1 | [M16 (tA)-mHw] ...
Every reference does not only contain the symbol for word-geography, writing
material, typology of writing and the primary reference placed between dots,
but when possible, also has up to three bibliographic indications, in which
the reference can be traced as photograph, facsimile and translation.

For means of orientation, every reference contains, when possible, a
reference to the Topographical Bibliography of PORTER-MOSS in order to
establish the exact topographical location, and furthermore to be able to
add additional primary and secondary literature.

This dictionary should become international in the near future and shouldn't
be dominated by the German language. Parts of this book have already been
subedited in various languages. The references on their own are more or
less independent of language, since they contain abbreviations, which are
explained either in the bibliography or the abbreviation list. The
translations of the entries, which for the time being are only in German,
will in the future be translated into other languages.
