Basic Training

Lackland AFB, San Antiono, TX

Nov. 23, 1995 - Jan. 8, 1996

The thing I disliked most about Basic was the fact that I missed all 3 major holidays. I had never been away from my family on Christmas before. That sucked! But I got over it, guess I'd have to sooner or later anyways. The other thing I didn't care for was the chow hall, not that the food was all that bad, but the mechanics of the thing. You walk in in a single file line, get your food, and eat. You can't look up from your plate, can't smile, or walk the wrong way. But what about all the screaming and yelling? Well, I am a pretty laid back person, yeah I got chewed out a time or two, you just stand there and take it, and try not to laugh in the guys face. Then you go back to the dorm and joke around about it. In one ear and out the other. But I must admit, Graduating Basic training was one of the greatest feelings in the world, knowing that you accomplished something that most people are afraid to even think about.

Tech School

Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, TX

Jan. 8, 1996 - June 11, 1996

My class

1 month of Basic training and 6 months in Wichita Falls, by now you should know why my opinion of Texas isn't all that great. But I must admit, tech school was a lot a fun. It is a lot like collage, with a military environment. One good thing about it is that the longer you are there, the better it gets. Once you get to know the people in charge and how things work, you can start using it to your advantage....

Part 1 of the Aircraft Maintenance course is Fundamentals of Aircraft Maintenance. This lasts about three weeks if I remember right. It is a course all Crew Chiefs must go through, no matter what kind of plane they may be working on. Here we learn about the very basics of airplanes such as tools, hydraulics, flight controls, engines, landing gear, etc. The propose is to familiarize us with airplanes in general.

Flight control day in fundies

Part 2 is geared for the specific airplanes we work on, in my case, the F-15 Eagle. This took up the bulk of the time I spent there. It is also where I made some very good friends, and had a lot of fun. Here I learned the basics of the F-15. We learned the location of major components, practiced removing and installing them, applying electric and hydraulic power and other essentials.

How do you turn this thing on?

So all work and no play huh?

Hardly. I had a blast at tech school. The Air Force is very good about keeping its people happy. I got a chance to go to Oklahoma City and see a friend of mine that I hadn't see for years. That is also where the muffler fell off of my car… I also made it to Dallas 3 times. Dallas is great! I loved it there! I also had a great time just hanging out with my friends there.

My messy room
Yes, this is how we spent most of out time, playing patty cake.
Goofing around at work is fun! I still do it today!
5:00 AM...... need i say more?

ROAD TRIP!!!

From Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, TX to Tyndall AFB, Panama City, FL

June 11, 1996 - June 14, 1996

The Air Force is trying out a new program in which they train the crew chiefs at Sheppard, then send them to a operational base for more "hands on" training on real, operational aircraft. For the F-15, that base just happens to be in Panama City, FL! Me and 4 of my classmates rented a Penske truck, A.K.A. The Penske Party Wagon, loaded up our crap, and took off on a 3-day road trip I will never forget. They wanted us to wait till Saturday before we left, but we didn't think that was a good idea, so we slithered out Friday afternoon and spent the first night in Dallas, which is only about a 2 hour drive. Saturday, we got lost in Louisiana and ended up staying in Lafayette. We got up late the next day and took out time going to New Orleans.

The Penske Party Wagon
We got up at the butt-crack of dawn the next morning and made it to Tyndall with a few hours to spare.

Hands On Training (HOT)

Tyndall ABF, Panama City, FL

June 14, 1996 - July 3, 1996

Beautiful Panama City Beach

Tyndall is by far my favorite place so far. All we really did is go over launch and recovery procedures. Hardly any actual work. Spent a lot of time hanging out on the strip, Highway 95 I think it was. I have always loved FL, it does rain a lot, but for the most part the weather is great, and of course there is the beach and the girls…..

Went home, took a break.

The Real Air Force

Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan

July 31, 1996 - July 4, 1998

Kadena Home Page

Well, here I am, in the real Air Force, doing a real job. To be honest, I don't get out much here, so I haven't really formed a opinion about this place. The Japanese people are very cool, but this whole Asian thing just haven't me. I normally work about 10-12 hours a day and sleep the rest. The weather here is very hot and humid, not my style. I work the night shift so it is not to bad, a little cooler. And there are a lot of typhoons, which gets us a quick day or two off. One good thing about this place is the travel. Since I have been here, my squadron has been to Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and Korea, but I only got on the trip to Korea. There are plans for Mainland Japan, Alaska, Las Vegas, and another trip to Korea.

O.R.I.- A.K.A. "Kwang Bang"

Kwang Ju, AB, South Korea

Sometime in April, 1997 (still kind of a blur)

Kwang Ju (A.K.A. Kwang Bang) is actually even worse that this place!!! We went there for an exercise, so U really have too much fun. The whole place reeked of the open sewer system. And the open markets there were full of butchers and all kinds of other dead animals that they actually eat! The dorm we stayed in was also worse than the one I am in now. We nick named that "The Crack House." We didn't have beds there either, slept on a cot the whole time. No water either. However with all that, I still managed to have a great time, and I am glad I went, wouldn't want to go back though!

Trip to mainland

Chitose AB, Japan

November 2, 1997 - November 16, 1997

Chitose was an AWESOME trip! It is a JASDF (Japanese Air Self Defense Force) base way up north. They are not used to seeing Americans up there, so the people were very interested and fun to talk to. I have a friend I went out with who has blond hair, and all kinds of people came up to him asking for pictures! Sapporo is a huge city that is about a 45 minute train ride from Chitose, visited there twice. Sapporo is awesome! I loved it!

Alaska - Las Vegas Trip.

Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, Alaska - Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada

February 20, 1998 - March 23, 1998

Pics from Alaska / Las Vegas trip!

Two words- Taco and Bell. I ate 106 Taco Bell tacos in this 4 week period! It felt so good to be back in the states again! And of all the places, Alaska and Las Vegas!!! Nothing really exciting happened in Alaska, a friend and my self rented a car (which we named "Crack" because of the cracked windshield) and went out on the weekend to the malls and Taco Bells and all the other places that make America great! In Las Vegas, I managed to meet up with a cousin of mine that i hadn't seen in like 6 or 7 years. Had a really great time just wandering around, seeing all the sights, and yes, even a little gambling! Didn't win anything though... oh well, maybe next time!

UPDATE!

Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan

May 9, 1998

Almost there! Just under 2 months to go till I get off this island for good! I got an assignment at Edwards Air Force Base, in California! I can't wait to get there! I never realized just how much we all take for granted in the states. Like the freedom to go anywhere, anytime we want. Sure we can do that here to, but it really doesn't do you and good on a small island! I have probably spent about %70 of my free time here in front of the computer, and the other %30 in front of the TV! I did get to go back to the states for a few weeks in March, to Anchorage, Alaska, and Las Vegas, Nevada. That was so much fun! It felt so good just being in the states! I have also been to Kwang Ju, Korea, and Chitose, Japan, which is on the mainland.
