This is just a small History on Ula Elmer Arnold
Ula was born in Camden, Benton County, Tennessee on 30 January 1921 at 3am in the morning. He was
born at home and was the 10th of 13 children. He is the son of Joseph Cornelius and
Sindy Francis Florence Helems/Arnold. His father was a farmer and he was raised to be one also.
This branch of the Arnold's departed Camden, Tn. around 1927, when Ula was 6 years old, in a
covered wagon headed for Missouri. This was the last time Ula lived in Tennessee. He says he
remembers the trip well. According to Ula it took them about 11 or 12 days to travel about 100
miles. They stayed in Missouri about 10 years and then moved on to Arkansas where they remained. He
talks a great deal about his boyhood and his growing up back in them days and how they really had
to scrape to make a living. I guess his worst memories are goin through the depression, and how
whole families were starving. To this day you do not want to waste any food around him. I guess
some of his fondest memories are of his hunting, fishing, and playing with his brothers when he was
younger. Of course he says the only time they got to hunt was when they could afford the
ammunition. Mostly he talks how everyone had to work the farm in order for them to eat. He did not
go to school until he was 16 years old, and then for only six months. He says during that six
months he learned to read and write and made it through the third grade. This was the extent of his
formal education. After him and Kattie were married they moved around quite a lot as sharecroppers.
After the youngest and seventh child was born they decided to settle down in Chicago, Il. They
remained there until 1986 when they retired, and moved to the small town of Anton, Kentucky where
they still live today. Ula Arnold Died 26 March 2003.
