My Story

On January 17th, 2002, I went to the doctor for irregular periods, but when I called the office the receptionist told me that my doctor was out for a few days and there was a doctor filling in for him and I could see him if that was ok. I told her that would be fine, I just needed to get in and get this problem straightened out because I had been bleeding for one month straight. So on that morning I signed in and was called within a few minutes. I went into the room and prepared for an examination. Then the doctor, who I had never seen before in my life, came in to examine me. He asked me what my problem was. I told him and he said, "Lay back, let's check." I did and he tells me, "Oh, you know what's wrong? You're hormones are messed up." I said "Ok, so what do I do?" He told me to stop taking my birth control and don't start up again until the Sunday after you start bleeding again. So I did. I went home and went on with my life as usual. The next day I stopped bleeding so I thought I would start again in a few weeks. So I went on with life and at that time I was really busy. My middle sister was getting married and I was her Matron of Honor and my two sons were in the wedding also, so I was busy and not worrying about my health. In the meantime I had developed a bladder infection. I called my family doctor and made an appointment. I went in on March 8, 2002. I told him that I thought I had a bladder infection. He asked what my symptoms were and when I told him he said it was a bladder infection. Then I told him about the irregular periods. He gave me a prescription to cure the infection. I signed a release form so he could get my records from my gynocoligist. He said he would look at these and we would get everything straightened out.

My next appointment was on March 21st. As I was sitting in the doctor's office with my father-in-law who had an appointment that same day, we were talking about my two sons and the amazing things they say and do. I waited for my name to be called. When I went into the examining room the nurse asked if I was having any pain from the bladder infection. I told her no, that I was feeling fine except for my periods. the doctor came in shortly afterwards and asked me questions. I told him about all my previous problems and he revued my records that he had received. He ordered a full blood panel at the lab. They did the blood work at the lab and I went home to wait for the results of the test. The next day, March 22nd, (our 5th anniversay), the doctor's receptionist (also my in-laws neighbor) called and told me in a happy, cheery voice that the test were positive. I said, "Positive? What do you mean positive?" She then told me that I was pregnant. I said, "OK." She asked if I wanted to make an appoinment with my family doctor or my gynocologist. I said I would call my gynocologist hoping he would be back in his office after his surgery. The first thing I did was drive over to my mother-in-law's to tell her the exciting news and was waiting for my husband so I could tell him. He worked late that night, so I told him the next morning. He asked me if they were sure because being on the pill he didn't think I could get pregnant.I made an appointment with my gynocologist but was told they couldn't get me in until April 1st. I bought maternity clothes and was beginning to prepare for the baby since I didn't have anything left from my last child who will soon be four. I went on with my life until Friday morning, March 29, 2002.
