Haarlem, The Netherlands: (6 pictures) – Day 35
Market Square and the Church - Haarlem is a pretty small town
about a fifteen minute train ride out of Amsterdam, and really the only
area of interest in town surrounds this main square. It was raining
a little in the morning when I arrived, but the weather soon improved on
this, my last full day in Europe.
Corrie ten Boom’s Room with Hiding Place - One of the things
Haarlem is known for is the Corrie ten Boom House. For those of you who
don't know, she was another person who was famous for harboring Jews in
her house. This is her room and closet where six Jews were kept for
days while hiding from the Nazis. The hole in the wall wasn't there
of course then, but the entrance was the bottom of the closet on the left.
The hiding place was actually very small, especially for six people.
Corrie ten Boom House - Her house is the second one in the alley,
next to the yellow building. The tour was interesting because first,
the old lady tour guide told us the whole half hour story as we all sat
around the living room. She preached a lot about religion and how
we all need to pray every day, but it was still a good story. We
then walked all around the house and saw everything.
Market Square - People started coming out in the middle of the
day when the weather got a little better. This is the same big square
in front of the large church. I enjoyed, or rather managed to swallow,
a raw herring sandwich I ordered from an eatery here.
Organ inside Church - This is a huge organ that Mozart played
inside the church at Market Square. The church itself is over 500
years old.
Red Light District and Church – This is the tiny red light district
of Haarlem, complete with one single prostitute looking sadly out a window
when I walked by.
