SLIPPING INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO

Daddy knew he had a sad and sorry group

in the car with him

so he turned our trip to Winnsboro

into a mini-vacation.

"We're going off the trail a little bit"

Daddy said.

"I want you all to see the Gulf of Mexico."

If he was expecting cheers

he was sadly disappointed.

The boys and the baby were napping

and Mom and me weren't feeling chatty

nevermind happy.

So Daddy drove us down to the Gulf of Mexico

in complete silence.

Daddy stopped near a little park

and we all tumbled out of the car

bleary-eyed

but Daddy wouldn't take sleepy for an answer

and he pointed out some forts in the distance

that used to be used for protection for our country.

We all hid our yawns.

A man came up and started talking to Daddy

and I went to some steps

that led down into the Gulf of Mexico

and the man said

"Don't do that, little lady"

but it was too late

because I slipped on those steps

and sank

into the green water.

I heard Mom yelling

through stopped up ears

and I saw little fish

and floating black spots

and green stuff like spinach

and I knew I was going to meet the Lord

because I was just sinking straight down.

I didn't know how to swim.

I wondered if I should die with my eyes open

or closed.

Which would look better in my coffin?

I prayed my last prayer

"Yea, though I walk through the valley

of the shadow

of death"

when I was grabbed

under my arms

and I thought it must be Daddy

come to save me

and I hung on tight.

He pried me loose

and hauled me back up to the sunshine

by one arm

and when I was dragged out of the Gulf of Mexico

coughing

water spurting from my nose and mouth

my hairdo soaked and ruined

I saw it wasn't Daddy

it was the man he had been talking to.

Daddy looked embarrassed

and I knew he couldn't swim either.

Mom and the stranger

tipped me over

laid me on the ground

on my stomach

and pounded all the water right out of me.

The boys were laughing to beat the band.

Daddy told them both to get in the car

and be quiet.

Mom got into the trunk of the car

and found my suitcase

and got me a change of clothes

and the man showed us where a bathroom was

and when we came back

and I was dry

except for my hair

he said to me

"Those steps are real dangerous, little lady.

They are covered with algae."

I was terribly embarrassed.

I should have known that

although I wasn't quite sure what algae was.

I snuck over to the car

and got inside

where it felt warm and dry

and the boys snickered

and I fell asleep.

Daddy said

"Wake up, Lynna-girl, we are in Winnsboro"

and I opened my swollen eyes

and I saw golden halos

around the street lights

and a Piggly Wiggly store

and a Jitney Jungle

and the town was dark

and quiet

because it was very late

and I wondered who lived here.

Daddy got the key to our house

from the next-door neighbor

and we all tip-toed

and whispered

and I made a beeline for the couch

and heard Mom and Daddy and the boys and the baby

talking

walking around the parsonage

but I didn't care about it.

I was completely tired out.
