Thillana

Alex

If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music. ... I get most joy in life out of music.
---Albert Einstein

 Thirai isai paadal

On meeting Alex, the first thought that strikes you is a gifted concentration of a variety of talents. His 'I live for music' energy, the surefire fingers on the Tabla; the sense of timing in his conversations, his histrionic ease on stage are a few avenues where he continues to enlist more fans and friends. However, in addition to all this, what you cannot miss is his passion for Thillana. Considered the main architect of the group, he is responsible for the metamorphosis of Thillana from its embryonic stage to where it proudly stands now: a showcase of immense and impressive talents.

Music has always been an integral part of Alex, right from the days when he used to accompany his father on tabla in his village church choir.  The inane talents and love for music took a formal structure during his grad school in St. Louis, Missouri, under the guidance of Shri Rahul Deshmukh. Moving to Bay Area he continues his formal training with Pt. Swapan Choudari and his senior disciple Shri Ravi Gutala (Ali Akbar College of Music).

While Tabla maybe his masterpiece, Alex has a melodious voice and a great passion for singing, bringing life to all his performances. He mimes the tones of singers effortlessly, be it a Chandrababu or a Shankar Madhavan. He is currently pursuing Carnatic vocal music under the guidance of Shri Ragavan Manian and Smt. Suguna Purushothaman.

Alex is also a seasoned actor and a promising dramatist, and was very well appreciated for his versatile performance in Naatak’s recent Tamil play Kalavaram.
