howard.gif (12316 bytes) The diary of Howard Armstrong was begun in 1896 when he was only 13 years old.  The eight journals cover approximately a 10 year period.  The exerpts included here were compiled by his granddaughter, Judy (Armstrong) Walgren, after she recovered them from her mother's home in North Carolina.   Volume one was received on August 6, 1999 -- just over one hundred years after they were first written.

The following was provided by July Walgren:  "In case you are unsure of the geography of this area. Cavanaugh Lake is about four miles (towards the west) from Chelsea. Chelsea is about eighteen miles west of Ann Arbor. It is the same distance east of Jackson. Parma is close to Jackson ( I think to the west). Chelsea is part of the Waterloo recreation area which includes Crooked Lake."
