A few years ago, I established a world-wide Armstrong Mailing List and introduced it as one of the genealogy services available through my Armstrong Genealogy & History Center web site. Through the web site, and particularly through this mailing list, I met hundreds of interesting Armstrong surname researchers around the world, several of whom were members of the major Armstrong surname organizations such as the Clan Armstrong Trust (CAT) and the Armstrong Clan Association (ACA)-- both organizations of which originated in the Armstrong homeland of Scotland. One of the list members I developed an online relationship with was a long standing member of the ACA and he offered to help me research my family roots as long as I promised to keep his identify anonymous (only members of the ACA are to receive such assistance).

He and I exchanged correspondence over a period of several weeks until suddenly, on Thankgiving Day, 1998, he sent me an e-mail in which he claimed to have found my missing ancestoral links back to Ireland and Scotland. Needless to say, I was both shocked and elated as I assumed at the time that he had solid references to back up his statement. We continued to exchange correspondence, but as I continued to press for facts to back up his claim he was never able to provide me with any information that I considered compelling. While the information he forwarded is interesting, I remain unconvinced that there are any facts to back up that my Martin of Shoreham, VT, actually connects as he maintains to Edward of Ireland. What concerns me even more, however, is that he was adamant about entering this information permanently into the ACA database. This, in my view, is a grave genealogical error as it seems likely that other descendants of my Martin Armstrong could receive this information from the ACA and unknowingly accept it as fact.

The names and dates from myself through Martin were copied from my web site, while those concerning the Martin born in Ireland circa 1748, and beyond were provided by him (even some of the information copied from my records was incorrect, such as the birth place of my grandfather George - should be South Dakota, not MI). The information he provided concerning each of my alleged ancestors from Martin through Alexander, the 6th. Laird of Mangerton Castle, will be linked from the names in the left column.
