BBC Radio Two 88-91 FM - Where will it be from August 27th 1990? ('FM for music')
WHY WILL RADIO 2 BE ON FM ONLY?
'Because of Government requirements, BBC Radio is re-allocating it's frequencies. A new national network, Radio 5, is to be launched on August 27th 1990, broadcasting sport and education programmes on Radio 2's existing AM (medium wave) frequencies of 693 and 909kHz. This means that Radio 2 will be available on FM only.'
WHERE IS RADIO 2 FM ON MY RADIO?
'First on the FM dial! Your radio's FM band may be labelled FM, or VHF. Whatever the label, it will be numbered from about 88 to 100 plus. Start with 88 and tune slowly. Before you get to 91 you should have found Radio 2 FM at least once, maybe in two or three places, so pick the one that is clearest. The frequency varies in different parts of the country.'
WILL RECEPTION BE GOOD?
'Because so many new radio services are starting up, the medium wave band will become very crowded and reception will worsen, particularly after dark. FM doesn't have these problems. There is room for more stations, the quality is better and it provides stereo as well. If you have a portable radio with a telescopic aerial, extend the aerial fully. Try it vertical, or horizontal, or at an angle, and experiment by pointing it in different directions until you get the best results - rather like what you would do with a plug in tv aerial. Of course, roof aerials work best for both FM radio and television, but not everybody has them.'
