Due to the immense mercy and
clemency shown by the DOP, George was allowed late entry into the tournament.
This will mean that each entrant will have to play another game - against
George of course!
George started off a bit rusty, and dropped games to John and Debbie, both of
whom had good games and are starting to adapt better to the 15 minutes time
controls. George recovered and played much better to win 2-0 against Harvey and
Marty.
Tony and Andrew stormed on to keep there 100% records barring their1-1
confrontation two weeks ago. Simon played slowly and carefully and was able to
manufacture a mate in one in the corner (Bishop + Queen) that Brian completely
overlooked. Brian’s reaction was uproarious laughter indicating the extreme
seriousness with which he is taking this tournament.
The only note of controversy was in the second Curran-Quaresmini game. John had
a simple a7xb8=Q+ to win the game, but accidentally touched Harvey’s
bishop on a8. Harvey claimed an illegal move. John didn’t know what to
do. Eventually the DOP restored sanity to the situation by declaring that as
John could not legally capture the bishop he was free to move another piece –
ie no illegal move etc. John played a7xb8=Q+ which leads to a 2 move mate, but
then offered a draw (????!!!!????). Harvey being a gentleman immediately accepted
(????!!!!????).
The Hillers were the only non-attendees from the tournament tonight.
