Round 8 game:

Six games were played
tonight with the biggest opportunity of an upset going to Mike Talbot who could
have ripped George apart with a piece advantage if he had not greedily snatched
another rook with his queen on his fateful 20th move, leaving
himself open to mate in the corner (see scoresheet below).
In other games, Gavin easily
accounted for James who allowed his queen to be trapped inside the first ten
moves. Harvey gained a piece up and was never in danger against
Marty. After a tight opening Andrew gained a few kingside pawns against John
with a rampant queen that proved the difference.
The game between Debbie and
Peter looked headed for a draw. The situation was that Peter had a rook on the
a file protecting a pawn on a7, with his king on h3 in front of a white pawn on
h2. Debbie’s rook was on a8, and she had a pawn at d4 with a king to protect.
Then, Peter decided to keep checking Debbie’s king to give her tempi.
Eventually the rook was sacced on d1 with the h pawn no further advanced. However
somehow Peter managed to push his pawn along the file until Debbie sacrificed
her rook to leave only kings on the board. In her defence Debbie said she was
down to the last one to two minutes (Peter had three) and had had a glass or 2
or 3 of something before attendance. Peter made no excuses and was just glad to
climb above his brother in the standings.
We’ll let Brian speak for himself upon the fate of his game with Gabby: “By move 18 I believe I was winning with a 2 or three pawn
lead. It was at this point that I unleashed a devastating blow. My Knight
captured another pawn, scorning its protection. If Gabby dared to capture then
the Queen would take the avenging pawn and fork King and a Bishop. With no
appreciation of the aesthetics of chess Gabby seized on the one weakness of the
combination and refuted it. What I had realised some moves earlier and
resolutely forgotten was that the Knight’s sally would allow Gabby to pin it in
front of the King and take it. While possibly up in material I was too
handicapped positionally – I had not castled and with no sense of fair play
Gabby made sure I could not repair the omission and get my Rooks supporting
each other. My Queen was also unable to get to the critical area. Gabby was
able to get his Queen into a mate in one position. I tried a most implausible
swindle and when Gabby refused to be gulled I resigned.”
