Lightning Tournament

Play tonight was subdued following the news of Doug Foster’s death on Thursday (16 January 2003). Doug has contributed enormously to the club over the years and will be sorely missed.

In memory of Doug and all that he has contributed to the club, it has been decided to purchase a trophy which will bear his name. This trophy will be awarded each year to the winner of the Handicap Lightning tournament held on the club’s annual prize night. Doug always believed in giving the weaker players a chance at glory and was a strong supporter of the club’s regular handicap and maiden tournaments. He was a tireless and energetic promoter of the game among the senior and junior players and we will all miss his presence greatly.

==========================

Results on the night are as detailed below, with Andrew winning the important clash with George, John garnering his first 2 wins of the tournament, and Paul and Brian engaging in a hard fought drawn series of 4 games.

Results:
Andrew 3 George 1
Paul 4 Peter 0
Harvey 3 John 1
Peter 3 John 1
Harvey 4 Brian 0
Paul 2 Brian 2 (including 2 draws)

Transfer

Andrew & Peter teamed up against George & Harvey and according to some accounts won 5 games to 4, although several win claims based on illegal moves were denied (“not in the spirit of transfer” according to the culprits). Nevertheless a win is a win - a great triumph for a Hiller!
