The Freighter

Welcome to the Freighter, your one-stop shop for the other aspects of GI Joe fandom so often over-looked for various reasons. This site is an expansion/renaming of The Complete Guide to DIC. I decided to move everything to a site separate from my original homepage because the Complete Guide to DIC is no longer just about the DIC series of GI Joe.

Here, you're going to find a little bit of everything with a focus on those bits of Joe-dom that haven't recieved a whole lot of attention.

The site itself is going to be under construction for a bit as we get settled in. I think you'll enjoy it!

OPERATION DIC: WRITE IN CAMPAIGN TO BRING DIC TO DVD -- Joe Battlelines has started a write-in campaign to help try and get the DIC episodes of GI Joe released to DVD. From the initial thread:

DiC has recently publically announced that they have reached an agreement with Shout! Factory to release their library on DVD if fans and collectors will show support for the release. That is where we come in.

While DiC is not Sunbow, or the comics, it has it's own place in the GI Joe mythos. It introduced many young kids into GI Joe. It's deserving of having it's own DVD release just because it's part of the GI Joe family. So it's now our job to help this happen.

So what do you need to do? Simply this...

Write DiC Entertainment at homeentertainment@dicentertainment.com and tell them you would like to see their GI Joe series on DVD. State your case clearly and politely. They are checking these and the more write ins we have, the better. In the days to come, you will see sample letters posted here that you can use a springboard onto your own.

That's right folks, DIC is willing to release their Joe to DVD if the fans show enough interest. So get those letter sent in! The campaign's been going on a while before this but it's never too late! Send those letters in and drop me a line, if you like, at kepulver@yahoo.com to let me know what you said!.

Links:

A list of sites that have been particularly useful in compiling these reviews. Or sites that are just plain interesting and/or cool. Give 'em a look-see.

YoJoe.com -- The source for information on the 3.75 inch figures. The site also has information on the comics and the cartoons, but the smaller Joe figures seem to be the primary focus. An excellent resource.
The Complete Guide to GI Joe: A Real American Hero -- The name is long, but it fits since this site is smeggin' huge. Information on the Joe line for the last 20 years (1982-2002). Focuses on the smaller figure line, the cartoon and the comics. Pack a lunch.
QKTheatre.com -- Dedicated to the original Sunbow/Marvel run of the cartoon series. Includes episode synopses, interviews with writers and voice actors, a listing/bibliography for the writers of the original series (many of whom went on to work for DiC)and a whole lot more.
JMM's G.I. Joe Comics Home Page -- Covers the original Marvel run of the comics as well as the spinoff series (Special Missions, Tales of GI Joe, etc) and the new Devil's Due run. Also includes the Quotable Joe, the injury list and a GI Joe comics timeline and the GI Joe encyclopedia.
JoeHeadquarters.com -- Another cartoon reference site. Their listing of the DiC episodes is what I used to help create my index. They've also summarized a couple DiC episodes, but apparently the project came to a halt at some point.
Sgtsavage.com -- An all-encompasing Joe fansite, taking in everything from the original 12-inch figures to the recent Joe vs. Cobra toyline and the new comics from Devil's Due. Also home to Brocklee's Li'l Joes comic book. Which leads us to...
Brocklee -- Brocklee is a very talented artist who is probably best known (at least among Joe fans) for his Joe-related fan art. He's also done some professional cartooning and is pretty damn talented. Check 'im out.
Joebattlelines.com The message board formerly known as Savage Soundoffs; now under new management, but still with that same great flavour.
Devil's Due -- Home of the company that is putting out the new issue Joe comic as well as Frontline and the Battle Files books. Their message boards are a good source of info on the various aspects of Joe fandom.
Brandon' Jerwa's Non-Stop Rambling Message board for Brandon Jerwa, the current writer on the Devil's Due GI Joe comic. Stop by for a chance to talk to da man himself.
GI Joe Reloaded -- A new Joe comic site dedicated to the upcoming GI Joe: Reloaded comic series from Devil's Due.
Action Force Online -- website dedicated to the British incarnation of GI Joe -- Action Force.
Jabootu's Bad Movie Review -- The spiritual grandfather of this site and one of my favorite places on the web, it was the review of the Captain Planet movie that inspired me to do my own reviews of the DIC episodes. Check out the Superfriends reviews too. Solomon Grundy commands you!
Dante's Inferno and All-night Video Store Another really good bad movie review site; this one also has a review of The Greatest Evil as well as reviews of the GI Joe, Transformers and Inhumanoids movies.
Joe Debriefed.Com -- (formerly GI Joe Fanfiction.com)
Operation: Stonewall -- is unfortunatley now long defunct. If there's enough interest, I might bring it back.

Special Thanks To:

Kylear for the freighter pics that adorn this site

YoJoe.com for permission to use their DIC art on the page.

Lars Pearson for permission to excerpt the reviews for the episodes I don't have from his book "Now You Know."

Brian Burke, Brian Kelly, Erica Romeo, Anna Waite, and Zach Collins for watching the episodes with me at various times, for understanding the obsession and not heckling too loud while I took notes. You all r0xx0r my b0xx0rs.

Extra Special Scrummy Thanks to Brian Burke for the artwork. You can see more of his amazing work at Supermegatopia.com (fun fact: Brian's brother looks almost exactly like Stiletto from MASK).

Also, thanks to Basil McCullen Fawlty for his continued support even though I know he's really more interested in playing with my pen and watching the static lines on the screen than anything else.

To Amy Howe for her continued support in this and everything else I do. Love you dollface.

And finally, last but not least, special thanks to everybody who has enjoyed the site so far and made me feel like I wasn't completely nuts for doing it in the first place.

Smarm Alert! Smarm Alert!

Dedicated to the memories of Jeff "Widget" Myers (1964-1999) who would have either loved these eps to death or hated them with a firey passion, and Agnes "Racoonslayer" Nutter (c. 1998 - 2002) who wouldn't have cared either way so long as she got food out of the deal. Wherever either of you are, know that I love you both and miss you terribly.
