The Flyers made a big
move up the ladder for the first round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft,
sending forward Ruslan Fedotenko, plus a pair of draft picks, to the
Tampa Bay Lightning for the fourth selection of the first round.
With that pick, the Flyers selected
highly regarded defenseman Joni Pitkanen from Karpat of Finland. He
is 6-foot-3, 202 pounds and gives the Flyers a strong player to
develop. GM Bob Clarke said it is unlikely the team would rush
Pitkanen to the NHL for duty next season.
With their other selections, the
Flyers drafted defenseman Rosario Ruggeri from Chicoutimi of the
QMJHL, right wing Konstantin Baranov from Togliatti in Russia,
goalie Dov Grumet-Morris from Harvard, defenseman Nikita Korovkin
from Kamloops of the WHL, defenseman Joey Mormina from Colgate and
left wing Mathieu Brunelle from Victoriaville of the QMJHL.
