The Fighting Deuce
The Fighting Deuce

The 272nd Military Police Company was constituted into the United States Army in 1944 and activated in India.  After World War II, the unit was stationed in West Germany in 1953 and then at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1965.

Shortly after the reactivation at Ft. Knox, the 272nd Military Police Company was sent to Nha Trang, Vietnam.  During the 1968 Tet Offensive, Viet Cong regulars attacked Roberts Compound and came fearfully close to the Field Force Vietnam Commanding General's quarters.  The Military Police repulsed this offensive, killing fourty enemy soldiers.  Two Military policeman died in this battle, which later earned the units distinctive designation of the "FIGHTING DEUCE" awarded by Secretary of the Army Stanley R. Resor.  "FIGHTING DEUCE" is a proud name that is still used today by the soldiers of the 272nd Military Police Company.

Today the 272nd Military Police Company is stationed in Mannheim, Germany.  The unit provides Law Enforcement activities to the Mannheim Military Community, while maintaining a vital combat support mission.

As you've already noticed, German Bundeswehr soldiers are now gaurding our gates.  They are doing us a great service by helping protect our soldiers and families.  Next time you ride through the gate, make sure you say "Thanks!"
