MY DARK SHADOWS OBSESSION
Dark Shadows was my all time favorite show as a child. I was 3 years old when the show premiered and in first grade when it ended. Why the adults around me thought it was suitable for a young child to watch such a thing is beyond me, BUT, I did love it so. I'd use it as a bargaining chip; agreeing to take a nap ONLY IF they would wake me in time for Dark Shadows. The adults would agree and I'd never miss an episode. And while I was secretly in love with Barnabas Collins, I also was scared to death of him. When my older siblings would get stuck babysitting me, they would torment me by shutting off all the lights and saying in a creepy voice; DARK SHADOWS, over and over until they had me bawling. These were the same people who would take my hand and make me hit myself over and over again...Ah, the love of a family...... lol

It was sad news when I heard of the death of Dan Curtis, the creator of Dark Shadows in March of 2006. He created something that I truly believe influenced my life a great deal. The very first book I wrote (in the 5th grade) was a Vampire story. Thirty two years later, and I'm still writing about the paranormal, in one form or another. No Vampire stories, however, for what character could ever hold a candle to Barnabas Collins?
   OdeTo Barnabas Collins

Darkness falls over Collinwood Manor,
The man of my childhood dreams,
And nightmares,
Walks those lonely halls,
Only in my memory.

He wanted to be noble ~
Doomed to dwell in darkness,
Immortal, Undead, Alone,
He still chose love; His sweet Josette,
Though she almost consumed him;
Such a tormented soul.

And I was fascinated by him,
His ring and walking stick
Still etched in my mind.
The man of my greatest delight,
And darkest fears,
Still walks there,
In the Dark Shadows.

Fast forward some 28 years or so, and lo and behold; ABC did it again; sucking me right back into another soap opera starring one drop dead (pardon the pun) georgous vampire;  Caleb Morley from Port Charles. The writing on this show was awesome, in my opinion. So many twists and turns. Sadly, ABC cancelled the show with many storylines hanging. Fans were left hanging too. I wrote to Michael Easton (Caleb) and told him how much I enjoyed his portrayal. I got a nice note and a signed 8X10 of him in reply. No, I didn't hang the picture over our bed.............
Now, in 2008, we hear there's to be a new Dark Shadows Movie, with none other than Johnny Depp playing Barnabas Collins. He bought the rights & everything! Can't wait for this one, folks!
