The CompanY - History & Highlights:

Organized in July 1985, The CompanY started out as back-up vocal group to such first rate artists like Gary Valenciano, Kuh Ledesma, Martin Nievera, Louie Reyes, Celeste Legaspi, etc., etc. This group has been a company of friends ever since their Ateneo College Glee Club days, where they acquired extensive and rigorous training in voice and in traditional choral works. When The CompanY made their crossover to professional singing, they applied the discipline and accuracy demanded by the classical school into the world of pop music. Even within this group, there are voice coaches, vocal arrangers, voice teachers, composers, lyricists, producers, scriptwriters and set designers. These singers also have had some experience in theater work as part of productions like "Rama Hari", "CATS", Jim Paredes' "Bayani" and the Japan tour of the original Asian musical, "Fantasia". As concert artists, The Company has had the privilege to guest in the shows of The Manhattan Transfer, Noel Pointer, Kalapana and Kenny Rankin, Jim Brickman.

The CompanY prefers not to be categorized as a vocal jazz group only. The Group has delved into all types of vocal group work. The musical spectrum of The Company ranges from Baroque songs to contemporary hits; from mainstream jazz to Filipino folk songs, and literally from Bach to Bacharach! What makes this vocal sextet unique is that it specializes in a cappella music with modern and unconventional harmony; treading that thin line between consonance and dissonance. Hence, a full performance without a rhythm section backing them up is possible. "Vocal Acrobatics" plus some interesting ( often times humorous) choreography make a CompanY performance a visual and aural treat for both the young and the young once.

In 1991, The Company released their debut album entitled, "'Yon Na!" under Ivory Records. That initial offering produced two hit singles for the group namely: "Everlasting Love" ( winner of the Records of the Year Awards in The First Pinoy Music Awards, Most Requested Song for July 7 to July 13, 1991 <DWFM>) and "Sana Nga (Ikaw Na)". "'Yon Na!" also received the Gold Records Awards for outstanding sales in October of 1991, only five months after its release in the market.

In the Third Awit Awards, The Company bagged the Best Performance by a Duo or Group Award, Best Performance by a New Duo or Group and "Everlasting Love" won the Best Composition Award. That year, The Company was the top recording group that garnered the most nominations; eight all in all.

In July of 1992, The CompanY released their second album entitled, "Six by 6" under Ivory Records. The first single from this latest outing was the heartwarming ballad entitled "Now That I Have You". It instantly became a hit and entered the Top 5 song countdowns of the different high rating FM stations in the country. "Now That I Have You" also became a Most Requested Song of the Week on DWFM for September 13 to 19, 1992.

The Company greeted 1993 with a Gold Records Award for the album "Six by 6"; given on January 10. The second single lifted from the said album is entitled "Muntik Na Kitang Minahal". Incidentally, it was a Grand Slam sweep for all the Philippine delegates which included Ella Mae Saison and Chad Borja.

Christmas 1993 was extra special for The Company because the group released their first Christmas Album entitled "Christmas Company". This 10 track album consisted of seven original contemporary Christmas carols and three re-arranged revivals. "'Til I'm Home Again With You" was chosen as the first single. The album quickly garnered critical ravesm good airplay and sales during that first holiday release. It was also during this time when The Company starred in their first television special, "Christmas Company In Wonderland" (December 17, Channel 9). This two hour musical, set in the Wonderland Amusement Park, featured most of the songs on the Christmas album and also the country's top film and recording stars as guests.

"Ikaw na Ikaw" was released as a single in the first quarter of 1994. In March of this year, The Company was part of the original cast of the musical production, "Fantasia". This oriental musical revue toured the four major cities of Japan namely: Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Nagoya. the cast featured theatre actors, dancers and pop stars from Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Mongolia. This third single from RecycleDeluxe II also charted high in the Top 10 hit songs of most FM stations.

The CompanY had another opportunity to mount "The CompanY Sings Carpenters" in

Cebu City at the Grand Ballroom of The Cebu Plaza last June 30. It was another successful concert wherein the SRO crowd took a trip down memory lane with the timeless appeal of the music of the Carpenters.

At the same time, The CompanY trekked back to the recording studio to start production on their 10th album entitled PoPcappellA. This time, it would be an all a cappella collection of reinterpretations of both International and Filipino pop hits. This was a very timely decision for the group because the Year 2000 is The CompanY's 15th year in show business. Add to the fact that it is their landmark 10th album, it was but logical to go back to their roots - a cappella singing!

However, production on this upcoming album would be temporarily postponed because The CompanY staged their grandest and most complex concert ever. "The CompanY HITS 15!!!" was held last September 16, at the Cinema 1 of the Shangri-La Plaza Mall. This one night only affair was the 15th anniversary celebration of the group. Once again, the theatre was fully packed; an SRO audience who once again gave them a jubilant standing ovation at the end of an almost three hour performance. "The CompanY HITS 15!!!" featured the group's greatest hits onstage and on their albums.

Currently, The CompanY is confirmed to do the repeat performance of "The CompanY HITS 15!!!" at the Music Museum on December 15 and 16. They are also the special guest of Jose Mari Chan in his big band/ swing concert on November 18. Production on their album, PoPcappellA, will resume. The group is determined to have this album out by the first quarter of 2001. A U.S. concert tour is also in the works for next year.
