The 15th annual Myrtle Beach event was marked by outstanding courses, low scores, harmony and fair weather. The good karma began with the flights down. The timing met everyone's needs and all arrived intact. The Chelsea House condos, its proximity to Green's and the giant bagel hot tub did not disappoint either. It took the entire four days to get the cash spread around to everyone, but in the end there were no shutouts. All agreed it was near the top of the fifteen trips.

The 2006 Roommates' Tournament was hosted by Moorland (one of the "Top 10 New Courses of 1990," according to Golf Digest) and was tight down to the wire, but in the end Steve and Scott B took the title. Thanks to some creative tournament design however, that meant they drank the trash. This year's leadoff event featured a 12 Pack Open format where the winning team got last choice of the beer. Second place Vince and Scott K. suffered the agony of defeat, but got first choice of the beer and enjoyed Pilsner Urquell all evening. John and Richard took third, picked second and chose Southpaw Ale. Tom and Jeff finished last, but got to choose ahead of the winning team. They took the Sam Adams Variety Pack. That left Steve and Scott with Yuengling Black and Tan. Yeesh.

We stayed with the Legends group for the Every Man Is A Diamond Best Ball (EMIADBB) at the Heritage Club, ranked among the "50 Best Public Courses in America" by Golf Digest. Scott K and John won the event, probably at about six under net.

Golf Digest rates the host of our third event at the Barefoot Love Course "#1 on the Grand Strand for 2005". It lived up to the hype. Scott and Richard won the event and Scott stretched his good finish streak to 2-1-1. Their seven under score was impressive, but even more impressive was their top two highest daily money wins at $41 and $33 respectively.

The final day dawned icy cold and began with a frost delay. Even though the frost rose blood pressure among some, it finally melted and a beautiful day ensued. We only saw nine of Heathland's holes, but they were spectacular and everyone looks forward to using the raincheck. Vince and Jeff got off the schneid by finishing second in their foursomes.

For the record, here are the handicaps. The next event is the 2006 Lobsterfest at Turnberry. After that comes Tom's Bachelor Open, perhaps the last of its kind, the Challenge at Tree Links in a special July slot, and the Club Championship at Champion. This year the CMGC has procured not only the best courses in the event's history, but also the most spacious accommodations. With two 3-bedroom condominiums at the club favorite Chelsea House condos, half the club has volunteered to pay $10 extra to have a non-master bedroom of their own. The cost difference is being assessed in the Entry Fees. Fortunately it all worked out smoothly with the roommate assignments. See the table at left for the details.

The 2006 tournament structure has been dramatically simplified for this year. Gone is the intricate wizardry of the carryover day tournament and in its place are the traditional favorites.

  • Friday: Roommates Tournament ($50 per winning team, or $25 per person). Here's where it gets interesting, so pay attention. There is a concurrent Roommates Semi-Reverse Seed 12 Pack Open 2-3-4-1! $48 of the entry fee buys four 12 packs of beer to be consumed by each team and picked based on team finish. First choice of beer goes to the 2nd place team followed by the 3rd, 4th, and 1st place teams respectively. Any money not used toward beer will be applied to rental car gas.
  • Saturday: Every Man is a Diamond ($50 per winning team, or $25 per person)
  • Sunday: Every Man is a Diamond ($50 per winning team, or $25 per person)
  • Monday: Foursome competition with individual net scores in each foursome ($25 for first place, $12 for second place)
  • Par 3s: Every par 3 will pay $8 for closest to the hole.
Note: $1.00 per person will be applied toward the cost of engraving the club championship plaque for the 2006 Club Champion.
