THE CAJUNS

They came from Nova Scotia
Forced to leave their land
Persecuted - banished
Their destiny in hand

Searching for a place of peace
of peace
  Away from all their pains
     They found "Acadiana"
Its bayous - bays and plains

They settled close to waterways
 Lafourche and Blue Bayou
The Teche - Vermillion - Mermentau
Atchafalaya too

A land of swamps - rich bounty
  Of trees with Spanish moss
They built their homes of cypress
  Their lives around "The Cross"

Work was hard - unending
  From daybreak - until dark
They made do with what they had
    Their spirits kept their spark

Poling pirogues through the swamps
       That led to inlet tides
They fished - trapped - gathered moss
Caught gators - tanned their hides

They cooked what nature offered
   Seafood - wild game stew
They called their mix " A gumbo"
  That started with "A roux"

French - their native language
Was changed a bit each day
New words mixed with all the old
    To fit "The Cajun way"

    They are a happy people
Love dancing - Fais - Do - Dos
    They like their Cajun music
It makes them tap their toes

They often "Pass a good time"
   With festivals - a band
 "The Cajuns" - celebrating life
At last - this is - "Their Land"
