FRODO BAGGINS
The nephew of Bilbo Baggins, Frodo shares his uncle's adventurous spirit. Frodo is the Ring-Bearer, the one who keeps the One Ring safe until he reaches the Cracks of Doom, where he can destroy it forever. He inherited the Ring from Bilbo after his uncle disappeared. Once it was in his posession, Gandalf told him it was the legendary One Ring, forged in the fires of Mount Doom for Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor. He, along with the rest of the Fellowship, took up the quest to destroy it forever by casting it back into Mount Doom.

GANDALF THE GREY
Gandalf is a powerful wizard. His knowledge of languages, ancient lore, and magic make him a powerful ally in the quest to destroy the Ring. He helped Bilbo on his previous quest, and is a member of the Fellowship of the Ring. He first informed Frodo of the power of the Ring, and also revealed to the Council of Elrond in Rivendell the duplicity of Saruman.

SAMWISE GAMGEE
Sam was a resident of the Shire, until he eavesdropped on the conversation between Frodo and Gandalf (concerning the Ring), after which he was "persuaded" to go on the trip by Gandalf (luckily for Sam, he was eager to go with Frodo). He, Pippin Took, and Merry Brandybuck formed a 'conspiracy' of sorts, and all decided to accompany Frodo on the journey. Sam is loyal to his master, willing to die to save Frodo's life.

PIPPIN TOOK
Pippin is a mischievous little hobbit, with a natural curiousity and a good sense of humor. He went with Frodo on the journey from the Shire, incited by Sam Gamgee to go with the Ringbearer.

MERRY BRANDYBUCK
Merry is another of the hobbits who set out from Hobbiton to Rivendell. He is equally mischievous as Pippin, and is often his partner in crime. He was also convinced by Sam to go with Frodo.

BILBO BAGGINS
Bilbo is the uncle of Frodo. Many years ago, Gandalf "nudged" Bilbo into going off on a quest with a company of dwarves, which would take the hapless hobbit through Rivendell, the Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, and eventually to the lonely mountain, where they battled Smaug the Dragon. While on his journey, Bilbo had a run-in with a creature called Gollum. Gollum had a Ring, his "Precious", which had the power to make creatures turn invisible. Bilbo found it, unaware of its true power. It was the One Ring, forged by Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom. Once Bilbo left Hobbiton, the Ring went to Frodo, who was told of its true power by Gandalf. After he left, Bilbo went to Rivendell once again, where he enjoyed the company of Elrond and the other Elves.
