The Anti-Hero's Journey
(Johnny Depp on Agent Sands)

The Bad...

"I kind of saw Agent Sands as this guy who had, ya' know, been in the CIA... who had been probably so annoying and so dangerous that the agency moved him as far away from them as they possibly could."

  "Total sociopath. Psychotic." [laughter]

"You know? Not well."

"One of the reasons why I wanted to wear like disguises, like really bad disguises, like the obviously fake moustache and the obviously fake hair... I thought that that would be something that Sands would wear in order to try to get someone to mention it."

[Depp on the set: "He wants them to say something! I dare you: Say something about my fake moustache."]

"He would be hoping that someone would say 'Is that moustache fake?', just so that he could kill them."

[Depp admiring his moustache on the set: "It's so wrong."]

"Keeping the balance. You know, the guy makes great pork - well [he's] gotta' die, you know?"

"I think Sands is one of those people who's just absolutely, totally for himself. Only for himself. And any kind of opportunity to create chaos, or kill, or trip someone up is purely for his own humor. Just for his own benefit. He just kinda' has a very, very perverse sense of humor."

"There's a nice moment - Robert and I talked about this moment - where I'm like saying, 'Okay kid, go far way', ya' know?"

"Go away!"

"Even a little moment like that after all the nasty stuff that Sands had done is in a way sort of redeeming in the eyes of the audience."

"There's something really beautiful and kind of poetic, ya' know, about the idea of a blind gunfighter... You know, guy goes out there - no eyes - and knows he's gonna' die and has to defend himself."
