Acorn
In 1992, Christine and her housemates decided that they needed a better mousetrap, so they adopted two cats from the SPCA. Initially named Lenny and Squiggy, and later renamed Hobbes and Spike, the two-some proved to be ineffective hunters but were kept on nonetheless.
Spike gave up the ghost (heart failure according to the autopsy) in '95. Not wanting Hobbes to be lonely, Christine and her housemate Scott decided to find him another playmate. A few months later Bob (who'd entered Hobbes' life in '94) and Christine found Little Lady at a Capitol Hill shelter. While Hobbes never formed the same kind of bond with Little Lady as he had enjoyed with Spike, he was happy nonetheless.
Little Lady left Hobbes' life in early '97 when Scott took her with him to Malawi. Not wanting to be outdone, Hobbes convinced Bob and Christine to take him along when the newlyweds moved to South Africa.
The ensuing three years were some of the happiest in Hobbes' life. He roamed outdoors at will, learned to hunt a bit, and overcome a large part of his fear of strangers. Even Sam's arrival didn't phase him. Next up: readjusting to life in the US, potentially in an apartment. Stay tuned.
