I've tried installing a lot of RedHat base linux e.g. Linux RedHat 7.2, LinuxTLE 4.1r2, LinuxSIS 4.2a but installation tool stop somewhere after load first dialog box that requesting for installation language option.
Then I try to use Slackware 8.1 that I download ISO image and write to CD instead, it work! May be Slackware was designed not to be ease of use. Anyway, I can start X-windows without any configuration on display card.
Some elements are not function and/or I have to do more experimental list below:
1. Modem
2. Sound
3. Ethernet
4. ACPI
5. IEEE
6. IrDA.
Update Jan 4th, 2003
I've tested my COMPAQ Presario 901AP with the following linux distros.
Slackware 8.1: After installation, I have to upgrade LAN and modem driver, but sound and ACPI haven't been finished. For IEEE and Irda, I don't know how to test. X-windows OK with generic VGA driver.
Mandrake 9.0: Install with command 'alt0 nousb nomce noauto'. After install I have to correct boot command by adding 'nousb nomce nousbstorage' and upgrade modem driver, other outstanding hardware problems are same as Slackware's situation
Sis 4.2a: Install with command 'linux nousb nomce noprobe'. After install I have to do the same as Mandrake. But X-windows has to be upgraded to XFree 4.2
Tle 4.1r2: Can't install even adding any option. It's possible boot image bug. I tried creating boot disk but got same result.
Redhat 7.1: Same as Sis 4.2a
Lindows 3.0: Press scroll button and use command line to install by adding 'nousb nomce' behide option. After install I have to do the same as Mandrake.
I've installed Grub as main boot loader, now my notebook has OSs list below:
1. Windows 98
2. Windows XP Pro
3. Slackware 8.1
4. Mandrake 9.0
5. SIS 4.2a
6. Lindows 3.0.

I'm going back to awake whole night with Linux again. But this time is better than before. Let follow:
Slackware 9.0: Install with options 'ide=nodma nousb pci=off'. After install I have to correct boot command with the same options used during installation and upgrade modem driver, Sound system is not detected automatically.
Tle 5.0: First of all, I would like to thanks NECTEC and ICT Department for their hard working to deploy very cheap but functional computer which is installed with Linux for low profile people in Thailand. Now the number of reservation is going to hundreds thousand units. This will bring Microsoft a lot of trouble in next few years.
This lastest version of Tle come with 3 installation CD. I install with options 'ide=nodma nousb nomce'. VGA card is detected during install but it's not pass screen test. So I have to select VESA 2.0 instead. After install I have to correct boot command with the same options used during installation and upgrade modem driver, Fortunately, sound system is automatically detected and it work fine. Multimedia key can be set easily with Gnome Control Center / Media Keys. But I can't find the way to set battery monitoring.
For IrDA and IEEE, IrDA has to be set using command 'serserial ttyS1' and 'irattach ttyS1'. Or store these command in /etc/rc.local file. If you want to sync with Palm base PDA you have to creat link 'ln -s /dev/ircomm0 /dev/pilot' or change device in KPilot configuration to /dev/ircomm0. IEEE is loaded but I don't test it yet.
FreeBSD 5.0: I heard that somebody has successed installing FreeBSD on this notebook. I'm going to follow that guy. Any progress I will report ASAP.
