Thane is located to the north east of Mumbai. This district lies in the northwest of Maharashtra state. Arabian sea is to the west, while Gujarat and Nagar Haveli territory are to the north.
Thane is about 25 Kms from the international airport and 35 Kms from the main down town of Mumbai City.There must have been something in the then sleepy character of Thane town in 1853 which prompted the British rulers to build the first Railway line in India between Bombay city and Thane.The establishment of Thane Municipal Council in 1862 for the systematic development of Thane of "THANE" as it was then called, added to it's importance. The Wagle Industrial area in Thane is the biggest industrial area in Asian continent. A great acheivement ! In and around Thane city are some of the major nationally reputed Industrail empires and international giants including Voltas, Sandoz, Roche, Johnson & Johnson, Raymonds, Nocil, Standard Alkali, Pfizer, Mukund, Asian Cables, Glaxo etc.
Rivers : Vaitarna and Ulhas are the two main rivers in Thane district.
Area : About 48 sq. Kms.
