The first thing to know about this scam is that you are not alone. In the first two weeks, our group has learned that the scam has been running for at least 20 years, and we estimate that some 15,000 people a year fall victim to this scam. In the first 10 days of our group's existence, we collected the names of over 60 people alone. Our estimates are based on the premise that for every one person who walks into the Tourist Police office to file a complaint, there are 3-4 more people who either don't realize they have been scammed or don't admit it out of shame or humiliation.

The aim of this site is to provide timely information on what to do if you've been scammed, collect information about victims to establish patterns and, most importantly, to share information in an attempt to increase the % of victims who recover their money and to make better awareness of this scam to incoming tourists. We also hope to pressure Thai authorities to finally crack down on this scam, but given the level of corruption and money involved, this is a longshot. By our estimates, this scam takes anywhere from $USD50 million to $USD100 million per year from tourists.
