Think of a printer as an optional necessity , if you need a printout of data, you need a way to print the information.   Many kinds of printers and printer options are availble.

We can break down the main categories of printers into the followig four sections:

Dot-matrix printers have the poor quality while PostScript have the best one.

On output produced on a dot-matrix printer, the letters are formed by individual pins pressed against a pinter ribbon.   Some dot-matrix printers offer good quallity at a low cost, but you still can see the dots when you look closely.  Therefore, if you need high-quality out-put, choose a printer farther up the scale.

At the top of the scale is the PostScript printer, a machine capable of producing near-typeset-quality copy at a fraction of the cost of typesetting.  In addition to high quality, however you get a high price tag.

The other two printers categories ( Inkjet and Laser printers) are in the middle in the terms of quality and cost.  Inkjet printers smooth out the dots produced by dot-matrix printers but still lack the quality of a laser printer.  A laser printer hits the quality mark but, without PostScript, a laser printer is limited in the number of different fonts you can produce.  Again, these printers are explained here only in generalities.
