AP Information for 2008-2009.

Teri Roah Hu

Mission San Jose High School, Class of 1988

Yes, that's my senior picture...you can tell it's the 80s because of the tacky white fluffy thing. Hey, I didn't pick it, all the girls had to wear it. Just like we had to wear those cheesy graduation robes with "88" ironed onto them. Yuck.

I use this picture to remind me of what high school is like...after all, there's no way that I would ever have voluntarily donned a drape made from the pelt of the abominable snowman. Whoever decided that for us certainly didn't bother to get my opinion on what we should wear in our senior portraits. I don't think any sane teenage girl would have chosen that thing, even in 1988.

Things haven't changed much. Adults still claim to make decisions in kids' best interests, but they rarely stop to ask them what they think their best interests are, then they're surprised when kids don't want to do what they're told. I think it's good for me to remember that feeling...the frustration of "grown-ups" telling you what to do based on their perception of what's good for you, without finding out what you really want.

I believe teenagers are capable of making choices. They may sometimes make the wrong choice...but you know, that's life. If they're smart, and lucky, those wrong choices will be lessons for later in life. I mean, if you're going to make a mistake, better to do it at 16 than 36, right? I try to respect a student's right to make a mistake. It makes more sense than dragging him kicking and screaming down the "right" path only to have him run in the opposite direction as soon as I let go. If it truly is the right path for him, he'll eventually walk it of his own free will...all I can do is show him the way.

So...that's my philosophy of teaching, and how I try to treat my students. Get to know them, listen to what they want, help them find a way to get there. If you, or your child, are in my class, I hope you can understand where I'm coming from. It's my job to help a student achieve his goals, not someone else's goals for him.

Finally, in case you're wondering why my students don't call me "Ms. Hu," it's because I don't want them doing owl imitations trying to pronounce it correctly. If you're really hung up on last names, it's pronounced like a question: Who?

And no, I'm not on first...sorry, Abbott.

I hope now you can understand why I choose not to use my last name.
