Swedish sayings translated to English,
which my poor (but patient) Aussie mates are slowly getting used to hearing...
A cross in the ceiling! = Kors i taket! = a way to express surprise over the unexpected
The cat knows = Det vete katten = a way to explain that you haven't got a clue
A horse's work = Ett hästjobb = describing real hard work or a tedious task
Hold your thumbs! = Håll tummarna! = keep your fingers crossed! We do make a difference between lying and hoping for luck in Sweden...
Not all wrong = Inte helt fel = a typical Nordic (norrbottniskt) way of saying "very good"
Misunderstand me correctly = Missförstå mig rätt = meaning, let me try to explain this again...
The laps and cleans = Lapparna och renarna = Swedish Same people (indigenous) and reindeer, some words are used more than thrice in Swedish, straight translations are rarely a good idea
Sausage-cent = Korvöre = it's not worth a whole lot, e.g. "it's not even worth a sausage-cent"
Paint the devil on the wall = Måla fan på väggen = to be expecting the worst
[more to come - thanks for the tip, Tim!]
