Swedish sayings translated to English, 

which my poor (but patient) Aussie mates are slowly getting used to hearing...


A cross in the ceiling!    =    Kors i taket!    =    a way to express surprise over the unexpected

The cat knows    =    Det vete katten    =    a way to explain that you haven't got a clue

A horse's work    =    Ett hästjobb    =    describing real hard work or a tedious task

Hold your thumbs!    =    Håll tummarna!    =    keep your fingers crossed! We do make a difference between lying and hoping for luck in Sweden...

Not all wrong    =    Inte helt fel    =    a typical Nordic (norrbottniskt) way of saying "very good"

Misunderstand me correctly    =   Missförstå mig rätt    =     meaning, let me try to explain this again...

The laps and cleans    =    Lapparna och renarna    =    Swedish Same people (indigenous) and reindeer, some words are used more than thrice in Swedish, straight translations are rarely a good idea

Sausage-cent    =    Korvöre    =    it's not worth a whole lot, e.g. "it's not even worth a sausage-cent"

Paint the devil on the wall    =    Måla fan på väggen    =    to be expecting the worst
