Vaccination

Kittens must have their first vaccination at no less than Six weeks (preferably at ten to twelve weeks of age) against Feline Enteritis and Feline respiratory Diseases, of which I have seen to for you Booster shot should follow a month later, then every twelve months after that. If you arrange with your vet I’m certain he will mail out vaccination reminders to you.

It is most important for the will being of your cat that it is vaccinated on schedule through its life. Vaccination is administered only at a veterinary clinic; the cost of vaccination varies from clinic to clinic

Micro-chipping

This is now a requirement by law in some states in Australia with some councils it is the local council requirement that you register your cat.  Micro chipping is less costly at your local qualified pet shops, or a credible  qualified Micro-chip Identifier and well worth your while to shop around first.

WORM CONTROL

The kittens are wormed at four weeks, at eight weeks, again at twelve weeks of age, then as directed on the preparation used.
The vet also has very good tablets for this, especially as your kitten gets older. Paste can be administered orally or rubbed on the front paws,

MOST IMPORTANT WORMING ADVICE

It is equally important that a cat is wormed on a regular basis for both the health of the cat and anyone handling the cat. Please realize it is important that the family undergo regular worming also, as it will save re-infestation. Costs of the preparation vary greatly; supermarkets are amongst the most inexpensive source for the same preparations.

FLEA CONTROL

Wash the kitten/cat with an insecticide soaps Shampoo. rinse with warm water

This breed of cat normally enjoys a regular bath (i.e. Monthly). The above treatment followed by the further application of flea powder in ten days.Take care NOT TO OVERDOSE your cat with insecticide.  There are some very good three to six week applications available these days for example Advantage, Frontline, and Program and can be purchased either at a Vet, Pet Shops, Veterinary Suppliers, these can be applied where directed and are very successful. Should you decide not to treat your cat in this method of flea control. There are flea collars.

Flea Collars

Flea collars are available for further control, however, if used, check the neck of the cat regularly, as many cats are allergic to a number of the brands on the market causing painful rashes which may require costly veterinary treatment to clear up.
NOTE: If you decide to use a flea collar, ensure it is not the type which has an elastic catch, as this will tangle with the cat’s fur causing itching which would lead to a severe rash on its neck. I personally hate this method and will not use them.  My reasons are that a cat spends much time on it’s own playing and romping and is a very curious and adventurous little critter, and I have heard of and have also experienced in my very early days of breeding, that these can choke, and even hang your pet, and that I consider too much of a tragic death or near death to the cat for me to risk that, however you may have lots of time to watch over your cat For you it could be safe enough. This choice is entirely up to the individual.  Daily brushing and removing any matting or knots will give fleas less of a chance to breed in the cat’s coat. Most Pet retail has a wide range of brushed. Highly recommended is the flea comb as well as the brushed.

DESEXING

If the kitten was acquired from me, as a pet or without papers, the male kitten should be desexed at seven months of age, female kittens should be desexed from six to seven months of age.  This I consider to be a right choice ,if you are not going to register as a registered breeder, As uncontrolled breeding is both unnecessary and cruel to the cat population, absolutely thousands upon thousands of kittens and cats are being euthanased every year because of man and his thoughtlessness in this regard and it is absolutely brutal of the people concerned.  Not to mention the innocent kitten or cat that was bought unnecessarily into the world to have no other fate.I would ask you to play a part and do the right thing and have your cat desexed and save these unwanted little ones from such suffering.

LITTER TRAY

The litter tray should be regarded as any toilet. Hygiene is most important. Change litter regularly, after emptying, clean with a safe disinfectant (containing Quaternary Ammonium Compound as the main ingredient) I find Amway Peruse a reasonable disinfectant) However if you want the very best buy yourself  GLUTACIDE it is absolutely brilliant and kills all infectious germs including the Parvovirus, virus germ, and that says something about this product, (No I haven’t any shares in this brand name, I just know the very best when I use it) clean your floors the animal runs bird cages litter trays you name it as I said it is absolutely brilliant and has a rather pleasant clean odor it breaks down to ten to one so you pay for one litre and end up with 100 litres. Naturally you would require smaller quantities. Chlorine is another great product for sanitizing are many types expensive or cheap.
For litter I use Max’s (RSPCA approved it doesn’t get that offensive odor that other types seem too. Other suitable granules can be, white sand, commercial products are available at supermarkets, produce stored, and pet outlets, horse pellets, laying pellets, as long as they are absorbent and clean the cat won’t mind.

TRAVELLING

Most cats don’t like travelling. They tend to make a lot of noise and do a lot of running around, getting under the clutch or brake pedal to the degree that it can become most distracting and dangerous when driving.

For these reasons it is most advisable to buy a cage in which to keep your cat in when you are driving, It may be, and probably is traumatic for the cat. It is usually best to minimize travel, and when necessary, on a long trip, give the cat a sedative (available from your vet and not at all expensive, so well worth the effort to consult your vet) administer half hour to one hour prior to travel.

When purchasing a cage, do not go by the price, instead look at the size of the cat, especially take into consideration the size it will grow, So shop around, good quality cages may be bought at department stores such as K Mart (even the Go Low Stores have these from time to time) at a fraction of the price to pet shops.

For the first few months of its life the kitten will need three regular meals a day. Depending on the weather, it could constitute two feeds, which will not spoil before the next. Cats hate spoiled food, or unclean receptacles so please take care to remove uneaten food, ensure the bowl is washed after each meal.

Even at this age ensure that the diet given, while nutritious, is in line with your lifestyle. Cats are carnivorous animals, their stomachs only digest meat substances; from time to time you will notice that they eat grass from the garden. The main reason why they eat grass is because they have swallowed something, which their stomachs can not digest, usually fur due to grooming. Consumption of vegetation (mainly grass) causes them to vomit. So don’t try to stop them eating grass they are taking NATURAL REMEDY MEDICATION necessary to their wellbeing.

If the cat appears to be dry retching, a small dose of paraffin, cod liver oil or Exelpet fur ball remover will assist the cat to dispose of that which is ailing it. If you give a regular weekly dose of Exelpet fur ball remover you will find this helps a lot in this area. If in doubt or the problem persists, consult your vet. Please always let your cat have access to grass or natural herbs (they know which are medicinal) I will cover this more in my Herbal section.

KITTEN

The kitten will become bored with the same food time after time; it is best to vary it where possible. For the first few months concentrate on the following:
“Go Cat” scrambled egg, grated cheese, minced beef, chopped chicken, or raw chicken bone, boneless cooked fish, (tinned or fresh) roo meat lightly cooked.

To drink give milk (i.e. Powdered cat replacement milk, Carnation, mixed with water preferably aged water, also a separate bowl of aged water as an alternative choice.

To be sure the kitten becomes a family pet, allow all members of the household, no matter how young to handle and play with the kitten, ensure that play does not frighten the kitten, the simple rule being, "Don’t do anything to the kitten that you would not like done to yourself". Treat the kitten kindly and it will be a lifetime friend.

CAT

When the kitten is about four months old, feeding rules must change slowly. Two feeds morning and night to fit in with your daily schedule.  The kitten at this stage should be able to eat most anything you wish to give it (keeping in mind that it is a carnivorous animal). It is advisable not to spoil the cat and give it what it wants.  It will require meat, fish foods and calcium, for extra vitamins. Your cat will love to chew on a bone, those which come on the dinner plate (but not fish or chicken bones, they can chew on a raw chicken bone and this is good for health teeth and gums. But never never give them cooked chicken bones). Make available lots of water daily.  Milk at this stage, while it might drink a little, will not be it’s most preferred drink, water will be.

CHOICE OF VET

Most locations have a choice of vets, as you would your family doctor. Some Vets prefer and are specialists in dogs, some in bids, some in horses, cows or fish, talk to your Vet and determine his/her interest in cats on a personal basis. If you find your Vet to be a genuine cat lover, that person will usually be the best to entrust your cat to for medical or behavioral consultation. Remember your best adviser is your Vet.

REAP YOUR REWARD

Believe me the most rewarding thing you can give your cat and it can give to you in return, is love. When you love your cat, he or she in turn loves you unconditionally and becomes a true and faithful friend. Responding to your happiness and a real comfort if you are down, grieving or in pain. A real companion if you are lonely, Now that you have made a cat part of your family, you will never be alone, and you will always have someone to talk to and who will respond to you.  They are a complete joy.

My theory to the true bond with your cat is: -

“LOVE IS DAILY DEVOTION”

So groom your cat daily for purrr…fect results.

God bless you, your loved ones and your pets.
