Ian Anderson was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1947.  When he was twelve he moved with his family to Blackpool, England.

   I. A.'s first instrument was a ukelele and then a guitar.  It wasn't until 1967 when he taught himself to play the flute, which is his trademark.

In addition to flute and guitar he plays harmonica, mandolin, bouzouki, and balaika in the band and writes most of the Tull songs.  He also has made three solo albums.

Among his many interests are animals and Indian cuisine.  He lives on his farm in England with his wife and two children and also owns a home in Scotland.
