Playing in the Band

continued
1974 produced Vol. 1 - History  and the band's first release with Arista Records, Wake of the Flood , with "Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodeloo", "Row Jimmy", and "Stella Blue".

The following year the Dead made
Mars Hotel, with "U. S. Blues", "Pride of Cucamonga", "China Doll", and "Ship of Fools" .  That same year Warner Bros. released a greatest hits album, Skeletons from the Closet, with "Mexicali Blues" and many previously released classics.

The following years of the seventies decade the band released
Blues for Allah ("Franklin's Tower", "Crazy Fingers") in 1975, Steal Your Face ("Sugaree") in 1976, Best of - What a Long Strange Trip It's Been and Terrapin Station ("Passenger", "Terrapin Station") in 1977,  and Shakedown Street ("Good Lovin", "Shakedown Street") in 1978.

The Godchauxs left the band in 1979, and Keith died in a car accident the following year.  He was replaced bt Brent Mydland on keyboards.

   The eighties first release was
Go to Heaven with "Alabama Getaway" and "Althea".  In 1981 two live albums were released.  They were Reckoning with "The Monkey and the Engineer", "Jack a Roe", "Deep Elem Blues", and "Cassidy", and Dead Set with "Deal" and "Loser".

No other albums were released for six years but the band continued to tour successfully and several band members worked on solo projects.

In the Dark  was released in 1987 with songs like "A Touch of Grey", and "When Push Comes to Shove".   The last eighties album was the live Dylan and the Dead in 1989 with "Knocking on Heaven's Door", "All Along the Watchtower", and "Gotta Serve Somebody".

Several live and greatest hit albums were released in the early nineties.  They were
Without a Net , Infrared Roses, One From the Vault, and Two From the Vault.

The studio recording Built to Last was released in 1989 with "Built to Last", "Foolish Heart", and "Blow Away".

In 1990 Brent Mydland died and was replaced by Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby.

Since then many greatest hits albums have been released, including
Hundred Year Hall, The Arista Years, and several Dick's Picks volumes.

The end of the band came in 1995 when the Dead's heart and soul, the beloved Jerry Garcia, passed on at the age of 53.  Deadheads and many other music fans mourned the death of the musician and cult hero.

The band officially broke up but some of the members continue other music  projects, including the Further Festival.  Many Deadheads continue to trade live tapes and tribute bands have sprung up all over the country.  Although the group is gone we are grateful that the music lives on forever.
