Cancer
is a word that no woman or man
ever wants to hear. It is
estimated
that 184,000 women will be
diagnosed with Breast Cancer
each year. Only
lung cancer causes more cancer
deaths among women.
Breast cancer is
a disease in which cancer cells
are found in breast tissue. A
breast has
15-20 sections called lobes,
which have many smaller sections
called
lobules. Thin tubes called ducts
connect lobes and lobules. There
are
numerous types of breast cancer.
Example, ductal cancer, found in
the
cells of the ducts, is the most
common type of cancer. Cancer
that begins
in the lobes or lobules is
called lobular cancer.
It is best to
detect breast cancer as early as
possible to ensure a wide range
of
treatment options. With prompt
treatment, the outlook for a
cure is good.
According to the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), the five year
survival
rate for women whose tumors
haven't spread beyond the breast
is 92
percent. When the cancer has
spread to nearby lymph nodes
under the arm,
the rate decreases to 71
percent, dropping drastically to
18 once the
cancer has spread to the liver,
lungs or brain.
Mammograms, or
special x-rays of the breast,
can detect more than 90 percent
of all
cancers, so it is important to
do self-breast exams, and
physical exam by
a doctor to detect cancer early.
Below I am providing you with
some
helpful links to help maybe
answer some questions you may
have, but if you
have found a lump schedule an
appointment with a doctor for
further test.
Some of the links have messages
boards and chat rooms, they can
be a very
good place to find support for
those who may be faced with
cancer or knows
of someone who has it.
