It was interesting to see so many familiar names so many years removed. I was on the Big John from the summer of 1987 to the summer of 1990. I left the boat as LT (SS) and as the Weapons Officer. I have no idea how much time we spent away from Norfolk, but it seemed like 80%. Three Med runs, and several Caribbean runs later it was time to go to CivLant.
I was humored by Dan Pintar's account of the fight between the USS Shark & the Big John crew members at 2 a.m.. What he forgot to add was what the fight was all about..... "My boat is better than your boat...." (needs to be said while slurring the sentence into one syllable). I was in the middle of that trying to break it up. At the same time, I had $ on Wally Chief...

Hey I see some familiar names have responded. I served on board Big John from April 1988 to Aug 1991. Reported to the boat in as an Ensign in '88 at the end of the Norfolk NSY SRA and left the boat as a LT (SS), in St Thomas, V.I. right before I got out of the Navy. Real sorry to hear about Maxwell passing on so early - he was one of the top notch radiomen when I was ship’s communicator during the ’89 Med run. Real good guy!! We won the squadron Green "C" after that deployment - those radiomen really earned it. Two Med. cruises (’89 when Big John got a MUC and the ’91 run during the Gulf War), numerous Caribbean runs, SDV ops, etc. Had IC div, E-div, MPA, communicator for the ’89 Med run, DCA (A-gangers/IC Div, Ship’s Diving Officer, QAO, etc, etc). I have some fond memories of my time on board. I thought the crew were some real great guys. The stories we could tell (i.e. the night when part of John Marshall crew got into the fight with part of the USS Shark crew on the pier late one night in Roose elt Roads, PR - the sight of the J.M. Ship’s Duty Officer getting racked out of his bunk at 2:00 am and running topside in his underwear to break it up, was something special!)

I served aboard Big John from the first few months of construction until Sept. of 1963. Prior to Big John, I served aboard the 344 and the 348 in the Norfolk area. I served in the Seabees from 1944 to 1946, got out, got my college ed. and returned to avy in 1957. Stupidly, according to some, I turned down O.C.S. when I returned to service. Personally, I don't think I made a mistake by making that decision. After a tour of Instructor duty at Key West Fla. from Sept. 63 to Aug. 66, I reported aboart t e Nasty Nat, SSBN 636 where I stayed until 1972. Left as Cob of the mob. Great to be able to contact some of the old gang.

Hello fellow Marshall sailors. I came onboard the Gold crew in Feb 77 as a snot nosed push-button 3rd class sonar tech. I stayed onboard until the summer of 81 and left as a STS1. Made 6 or 7 patrols (I lost count), the combining of the crews, and, made the trip through the ditch to Charleston. Great times (and some not so great) I left immediately there after. I stayed in until 95 and retired as a STSCS. Now I live a quiet life as eye doctor in Oklahoma. Hope to hear from anyone who might remember m .

Good to see that there are still plenty who will continue to remember Big John. I rode her during the Gulf War on her Med cruise of 1991. It's tough to put names to all the faces I remember, as I was there only a couple months. I was a Russian linguist rider out of Rota Spain. I rode quite a few boats, some longer than others, but Big John has always been one of my favorites.

Spent most of 1980 and 1981 riding the USS John Pig (the old man hated that name... chewed me out for using it... but the crew loved it). So what ever happened to Eddie Street and Shawn Mayo? Rode her from Guam to Pearl, to Bangor, San Diego, through th Canal, and on to Charleston. Was young and difficult to manage... now I have a teenage son... and getting a dose of my own. :)

Wow, it took me awhile to find this site but I'm glad I didn't give up. John Marshall was my only boat. Assigned to 611 Blue out of school school in late '65 and made two patrols before the overhaul at Newport News. Shangaied into the Admin Department nd made into a yeoman during the 18 months there. Spent the shakedown plus two patrols on the Gold crew as junior and then lead yeoman [YN2(SS)]. Saw that Michele Dolgos was looking for shipmates of her father's. Tried to email her but system wouldn't ccept. Does anyone remember the incident/accident at the apartment I shared with Dolgos and Kjos? Still bring that one up for conversation every once in awhile. Also think fondly of Co Ritz and XO Gooding. Good people who made being out on patrol duri g Christmas easier to handle. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers either me or other JM tales. Plank owner, served on JM from 7/61 to 8/63 as a Storekeeper on the Gold crew. I am very proud of the fact that I was on the planes for her very first dive in 1962 and again for her very last dive in 1993. I believe the total number of dives she made in her thirty one years was 1,312. Don't pin me on that but it's very very close. I also have a beautiful chunk of her pressure hull sitting right in front of me just above my monitor along with a molded brass replica of her final configuation made from her brass melted down and poured into the mold of her along with a Plaque with her two ships patches inscribed (the official one designed by the original crew and her unofficial one depicting her duties as a "Seal" boat} and my name and the words "Plank Owner" and the commission and decomission dates all mounted on a piece of 4x6 wo d about 12" long that her batteries sat on. These were made during her SRP while still under the command of her last Commanding Officer CDR. Brian J. Wegner USN. One was sent to Captain Stecher and one to myself shortly after He and I had rode her togeth r on her very last voyage from San Diego to Bangor.in late January of 93 ariving in Bangor 5 days later in Feburary of 93. She traveled her last few miles under tug power after her reactor had been shut down for the last time. This plaque is one of my most valuable posessions and as you can tell I brag about it every chance I get. She was a great ship!!! My time on the John Marshall has become a large part of what I consider to be the most important time in my life and I am VERY PROUD to have served on board her.

Reading the Deck Log really brings back some great memories. I Rode the John Marshall 611(B) Dec 72 – Apr 74, combined crews for overhaul at Mare Island NSY, then 611(G) Apr 74 – Apr 77. The JM was my first boat and I came aboard as an ETR-3 assigned to Reactor Controls Division, qualified as Reactor Operator and SMAW. Made three patrols out of Rota Spain, Crazy Bob, Panama Canal, St. Croix, Overhaul, Port Canaveral, daso run, middi OPS, Sonar Eval. Remember the “Middle East Crisis”? The Blue crew h d just finished its patrol, but instead of doing a normal turnover to the Gold crew, the more experienced Blue crew was sent out again. The Blue crew was really pissed off, and that was the longest 10 days at sea I can remember. The crew did absolutely oting, no drills of any kind, to avoid detection. I remember spending my watch in AMR-2UL making a rope bracelet out of orange shot line with the AUX-Aft. I also had the distinction of making the only successful at sea “wire splicing” repair job on the Reactor Protection & Analysis drawer (strictly forbidden by Naval Reactors). After another operator during routine maintenance closed the drawer too quickly cutting 13 wires in the bundle. We were shutdown and snorkeling on the surface for 4 hours will I made repairs. The captain had the mess cranks bringing me iced coke to AMR-2 UL, keeping me going. The Nukes should also remember Jackie & Ethel Kennedy ( ort & Starboard SSTG sets) before the 2nd overhaul, after they were reinstalled the brass nameplates were considered in appropriate and not replaced. I also have the original Lock & key set #11 from the Reactor Room obtained during overhaul. I still have the John Marshall pocket lighter Boyd Grandy engraved for me while standing the mid-watch in the Maneuvering Room. I would also like to here from Steve “Stevie” Reynolds RCLPO or any other crewmember’s who served with me. After serving a ten year period at Bangor Submarine base riding the Georgia (Plank owner) and Henry M. Jackson, I retired in Mar 91. I now work as a Network Manager for a large company.

I served on the John Marshall SSBN 611(B) crew from late 1976 until the Spring of 1979 as part of the Polaris AT3 missile gang. I joined the blue crew just before the 1st patrol cycle out of Guam in early 1977, after the DASO test shot and transit from Merrits Island, FL to Hawaii. I remember the transit to Guam being a little turbulent, but it was a short ride. The next patrols tended to be a little longer, like 72 days or so. It was a pleasure working with and celebrating with my fellow JM crewmembers some years ago. AaaaOoooGaaa!!! You can also change my email address to:

I was an EM1(SS) on the Marshall Blue Crew from 1979 till she pulled into Pearl enroute to offload missiles. I then detached to shore duty at Pearl Harbor. Just received word about the site from Jim Scobie EM2 (SS) who was also on that crew. It is a nice site, and I hope you keep it going.
To Bill Noonan.. Remember the day we went swimming at Kaena Point? You and your fiance and my sister. Three of us almost drowned as I recall. Good to see that you are still around. I am still in touch with Scobie. Anyone heard from Cecil?

ELPO from 10/90 to 7/92. Took "Big John - the Anti-terrorist Assault Submarine" to the Med for Desert Storm, put out a few fires and fixed some MAJOR issues to keep it at sea during the "Storm". Continued on to take it to Puget Sound for Decommisioning. Great boat! Best of my career! It was a shame to see it dimantled, but it served it's country well. The anchor was donated to an Elementary School in Port Orchard, Washington and is on display in front of the building. I even ended up with one of the original klaxons. (My wife won't let me hook it up to the doorbell, do you believe that?) I have some great underway pictures with the Dry Deck shelters. I'll send them as soon as I get a chance.

I have wondered for years about my shipmates on the John. I served as a Submarine Qualified Medical Officer under both Don Kniss (Blue) and Fritz Ritz (Gold) from December 1967 until early 1970, went through the overhaul at Newport News and had a great e perience as a diving officer. Mostly I remember the great crew from the SN mess cooks to the great CO's. I still have recordings of the commissioning ceremony and copies of the pictures and the documents which will be available if anyone has the desire or the website. It was a great experience for me and I am extremely grateful to have had the experience and am proud to have served with the Navy's best. Service aboard the John was the capstone of 29 years of service for me. Fair winds and following s as.

If any of you Plankowners would like a copy, email me. Can't guarantee you'll get it THIS year, but I'll be glad to make copies for the cost of a tape plus postage. I was on the Blue Crew initial voyage. I would love to hear from any of my shipmates!

A John Marshall SSBN 611 web site is great! It would be greater if I was the first GOLD CREW PLANKOWNER to "surface"! If we can set up a reunion I'll be there. Put me on your mailer. Thanks.

I made the first patrol with the Blue Crew. Good Ship. I hope this page helps to locate former shipmates and John Marshall sailors.
