News to Tell
By: G. Barton

Parker came into the kitchen after all the kids were gone to school. She walked in to find Jarod still there.

"I didn't you know were still here." She mumbled not really wanting to talk to him.

"I thought you might want some breakfast."

"No, thanks." She snapped.

"When are you going to get over this mad spell?"

She didn't answer him. She gathered up the some of the dirty dishes on the table.

"I can get those."

She didn't pay him any attention. He walked over to the table, and stood right behind her. He could smell her perfume.

He missed her so much. He reached out to touch her when she grabbed his hand.

She turned to face him, wanting to yell or something but she looked into his eyes.

"We have to talk." Jarod said trying to control himself.

"I don't want to talk. I'm not in the mood."

"Well...you are going to get in the mood. I'm tired of this."

She looked at him, not believing what she just heard.

Jarod brushed her cheek with his fingertips. "I want to know something."

"What?" She turned her head to keep from looking into those baby brown eyes.

He turned her back around to where her face rested in his hand. "I know you are mad at me over this whole pregnancy thing. I just want to know, do you want me leave because if that will make you happy then I will."

Her eyes looked confused at what he just said. "No, I don't want you to leave. Why would you say that?"

"I'm tired of the fighting and I thought you might want some time to yourself."

"Please, don't leave me." She whispered as her lips touched his. "I love you."

"I love you too. But..."

"But nothing. Jarod, I'm sorry."

He picked her up and sat her down on the table. She pulled him down to her and his arms cleared off the dirty dishes from the table.

Hours later, rooms later, Parker reached over and grabbed the phone.

"What are you doing?" Jarod asked as he raised his head from her chest.

"Saving my marriage." She began dialing.

"Simone, please." She waited for the connection.

"Simone."

"Melissa....aren't you late?" Simone looked at the clock above the door.

"That's why I'm calling. I'm not going to make it."

"Okay, I hope you not feeling bad."

"No, I just have some unfinished business to take care of."

"See you tomorrow."

"Bye." The phone disconnected.

As she placed the phone back on the table, Jarod kissed her. "What is the 'unfinished' business that you have to take care of?"

"Come closer and I will show you."

"Uh..I'm liking it already." He pulled the covers over their heads.

The next morning, Parker stood in front of the long mirror, moving from one side to another. "Jarod."

"Yeah." He answered as he kept brushing his teeth.

"I think we are going to have to tell our family soon." She rubbed her stomach with her hands.

"I have been saying that for a while."

"I know but..."

Jarod entered the bedroom. He stood there watching her stare at her stomach. She looked up and saw him staring. "What?"

"Nothing." He answered.

"Then why are you looking at me like that?"

"I'm just admiring how beautiful you look."

"Oh, please." She walked into the bathroom, shoving him out of the way.

"Hey, I was there first."

She shut the door.

******

A few days later everyone gathered at their house. Charles, Margaret, and Ben were talking when Simone, and Broots entered the room and took a seat. A few minutes later they were joined by Michelle, Nicholas, and Sam.

"Who isn't here yet?" Jarod asked.

"Emily." Margaret answered.

"Come on, what's this all about?" Charles asked.

"You will have to wait until everyone is here."

Charles looked down at his watch again. "What is keeping her?"

A few seconds later, the door opened and Emily came through. "It is about time. We were going to start without you." Jarod stated.

"I'm sorry." She whispered as she made her way through the crowd for a seat.

"Finally!" Charles raised his arms into the air.

"Okay, we have an announcement to make." Jarod stood in the middle of the room.

Everyone turned to face him.

Parker stood in front of him. "We are going to have another baby."

Everyone cheered.

"Wait there's more." Jarod yelled over the noise.

"We are going to have twins." He grinned from ear to ear like he was proud of what he did.

"Congratulations."

"What's all the noise about?" J asked as he and Debbie walked into the room.

"Jarod and Melissa are going to have twins." Sam answered.

"Oh wait...did you say..." J replied.

"....Twins." Debbie finished for him.

"Yeah." Sam responded back.

Everyone hugged them with joy.

Simone whispered into Parker's ear. "So, everything is going to be okay now."

Parker shook her head.

Broots walked up. "So, does this mean no more bad moods?"

"I wouldn't say that." Jarod quickly answered that question.

Parker hit him on the shoulder. "Ow."

*******

A week later, Parker's secretary interrupted her.

"I know you said you didn't want to be bother right now but there is someone out here that wants to talk to you."

"Who is it?"

"I'm not sure. He wouldn't give me a name. All he said is it is very important."

"Send him in."

A short man dressed in a black suit, carrying a brown leather brief case walked in. "Miss Parker?" He stuck his hand out.

"It's Mrs. Russell. What can I help you with?"

"I was sent here by Brigitte. I am her lawyer."

"Oh." Parker's voice dropped at the sound of her name.

"I was told to deliver this to you in person and wait for a response." He handed her a brown, legal size envelope.

"What's this?"

"Open it."

"I'm not sure I want to. We weren't exactly best pals."

"I know but she's not going to hurt anyone any more."

Parker looked at him funny.

"She's passed on, ma'am."

"Oh, I see. Then why are you here?"

"You will see. Open the envelope."

Parker pulled out some papers and skimmed over them.

"I don't know. I need to talk it over with my husband."

"That's fine, ma'am. You can reach me at this number. I will be staying at the Raddison Hotel." He handed her a business card. "Thank you for your time." He turned to leave.

Parker looked down at the papers again. She got up and went searching for Jarod. She found him in one of their labs.

"Hey, honey." He replied as he saw her entering.

"What are you doing?" She bent down and kissed him.

"Looking over these reports. What are you doing?"

"Well....funny you should say that. I just had a guy walk into my office and hand me these."

"What is it?"

"Papers."

"For what?"

"He was Brigitte's lawyer."

"What is she up to now?"

"She's not up to anything. She's six feet under."

"What? Let me see those." Jarod skimmed over the paperwork. Then read it again carefully. He looked up at her. "Well...what are you going to do?"

"What do you mean what I'm 'I going to do'? This involves us. What do you think we should do?"

"I think you should do it."

"I know, Jarod but another child? We have two more on the way. By the way, we are going to need a bigger house."

"I know. I thought we would begin looking in a few days. Back to Dylan, he needs a nice home. He needs to be around people who will love him."

"What about his father?"

"Lyle? Come on. You have to be kidding. I don't trust him with a tiger."

"I know."

Jarod pulled her down into his lap. He wrapped his arms around her. "We can make this work. Think about the boy."

"Fine. I will call the lawyer back."

He kissed her cheek.

Nichols entered the room. "Oh, I didn't know anybody was in here."

Jarod turned the chair around to face him. "You can stay. I was going over some paper work."

"And I'm leaving." Parker got up from Jarod's lap and waddled out.

"I didn't mean to interrupt anything."

"You didn't."

"I just came for this." He grabbed a book and held it up.

Simone and Broots met Parker in the hall. "I'm sorry." Parker responded as she bumped into them.

"It's okay." Simone replied.

"Where are you going in a hurry?" Broots asked.

"I have to call a lawyer."

They faced one another and followed her back to her office.

"A lawyer. What happened?" Broots knew they had been fighting but to call a lawyer. He thought this was a bit much.

"Nothing."

"But you said..."

"Here Broots." She handed him the papers.

Broots began reading...."I, Brigitte, here by give custody of my three year son, Dylan Lyle Parker, to Melissa Parker Russell." He stopped. "Wow! Brigitte gave you custody of her son. Why?"

"She's dead, Broots."

"I know but why you?" Broots crossed his arms at his chest.

"What's wrong with me?"

"Nothing...I mean what about Lyle?"

"Would you want that psychopath caring for you?" Simone asked Broots.

"Thank you." Parker stated.

"Well...no." he answered.

Parker picked up the phone and dialed the number on the business card.

******

A couple of days later, Parker and Jarod stood by the terminal in the airport.

"What time is it?" Parker asked for the hundredth time.

"2:00."

"2:00."

"Yeah, you know, a minute ago it was 1:59."

She stuck her tongue out at him. "You don't have to be such a smartass."

"Well...you asked me what time it was for the last ten minutes."

"I know. I can't help it."

"Would you calm down?"

"I can't. What if we don't hit it off?"

"You will. Besides, he's three."

"I know but look at what our kids knew at three."

"Come on, he's Lyle's."

Parker gave him a 'go to hell' look.

"What was that for?"

"Be nice."

"I am. I'm sorry." He kissed her cheek.

"Look there's the plane."

They waited as the all the passengers exited off one at time. The lawyer walked up to them with a three year old boy. He had light brown hair and crystal blue eyes. "Dylan, this is Melissa and Jarod. They are going to be taking care of you."

"I want my mom." He cried.

Jarod bent down so they were eye level with him. "I know you do but your mom is in a better place now. We are going to take care of you."

"Do you have any children to play with?"

"Yes, we do." Jarod answered. "Would you like to meet them now?"

The boy took his hand as Parker and the lawyer walked behind them talking.

When they arrived at home, Jarod took him inside to meet everyone.

"Dylan this Catherine, Kyle, Sydney, Angelo, and Debbie."

"Hello Dylan." They all answered as they walked up to him.

"They are all your kids?"

"No, Angelo lives with us and Debbie was staying here until we got home with you."

"Oh." He walked around the house, touching and picking up things then setting them back down.

Then he sat down on the couch.

Parker and the lawyer met at the kitchen table and she signed the last of the papers before he headed back out.

"Dylan." Parker said as she sat down next to him.

"What?"

"What would you like to do? I can show you to your room or around the house."

"I guess my room. I'm a little tired."

She took his hand and went up the stairs. "This is going to be your room for now. You and Kyle will have to share. I hope you don't mind 'cause our family is growing..." She patted her stomach. "...and we don't have room for them all right now. But I will tell you this, you will be loved the same as everyone else."

"This is fine."

Jarod entered shortly with his suit case. "I thought you might want to unpack a few things."

Dylan looked around the room. He wasn't sure if he was going to like it there but knew he didn't have much of a choice.

******

Several days later, Nicholas entered her office.

"Hey, how is our little mother doing?"

She glared over at him. "Fine."

"How is Dylan coping with his new family?"

"Fine, I guess. He has cried himself to sleep the last few nights, but he asked us if he could call us mom and dad."

"What did you tell him?"

"I told him it was fine. By the way, did you want something or to just come to pester me?"

"Both." He smiled.

Parker stared at his smile. It reminded her of Sydney.

"What is it?"

"Nothing. What was it you wanted?" She turned her head.

"No, what is it?"

"You just looked like your father then."

"Oh." He took a seat and handed her a folder.

"What's this?"

"This is the file on Adam."

"Adam?"

"Adam is the kid I have been working with. He lost his parents in a plane crash."

"I remember him."

"Well, he has similar problems like Dylan. I was wondering if I could monitor Dylan and Adam together?"

"Sure. I think Dylan would love to have a friend right now."

"Thanks." Nicholas got up and headed out.

Jarod ran in like he had seen a ghost. "Melissa." He panted.

"What is it?"

Before he could speak Broots came in behind him. "I have something you both will want to see."

"What?"

Broots looked over at Jarod. "You go first." He could tell that Jarod wanted to say thing very important.

"I just ran a DNA sample on Dylan and you are not to believe what I found out."

"He's your son." Broots answered.

Jarod faced him. "How did you know?"

"This." He held up a envelope and a DSA disk.

"Where did you get that?"

"I accidentally opened it by mistake. I thought it was the new..."

"Forget that. What's on it?" Parker demanded.

Broots brought in a silver case and sat it down on her desk. He pushed the disk in. An image of Brigitte came up, "Parker, if you get this then you know I didn't make it. I'm sorry for all the trouble that I caused. As you may or may not know, Dylan is yours and Jarod's son. I thought at the time it was a good idea to go along but now I know it wasn't. Raines and your father wanted a Pretender and since you had disappeared he lost his chance with you and Catherine gone. He knew that if you were really dead then Jarod took Catherine and left for good. I don't know how but Raines took specimens that belonged to you and Jarod and implanted it into me. Somehow he knew that Dylan was going to be a boy. Raines gets what Raines wants or so he thought. I couldn't let him take my baby away. I'm just glad I got to spend three years with him before he he was reunited with his real parents. I hope he has been good for you. I have tried to explain to him about his real parents. Please tell him, that I love him. Since I'm already dead, then you might as well know the rest. I am responsible for killing your father. I'm sorry. I just couldn't help it. All he ever talked about was 'his angel'. I couldn't compete with you. I never have been able to. I hope someday you can find it in your heart to forgive me."

The screen went black.

"What's the letter about?"

"It's a letter to Dylan."

Parker grabbed it from Broots' hands. As she began reading tears fell from her eyes. Jarod pulled her next to him and held her.

"I'm sorry." Broots mumbled.

"For what?"

"For the Centre. Even though it is gone it seems to still destroy us."

"Not this time." Parker raised up. They watched her as she wiped the tears. "The Centre may have been evil but Legacy's not. We are putting the past behind us and moving on. I'm thankful that I have a family and friends and that we are together. We are survivors."

"That we are." Jarod replied as he stared down at the blank screen.

"I agree."

The End!
