The Tefft Family Association invites you to join us in preserving our heritage through research, sharing and discussion of Tefft genealogy and history.

Our family association began late in 1999 after a group of Tefft descendants who had been communicating on the Internet learned that their ancestral home in America was threatened by development. Today, we are working to turn the Tefft Homestead into a national historic park, preserve Tefft cemeteries, and build an organization to learn more about what it means to be a Tefft.
Tefft is the family you belong to if your name is spelled, Tifft, Tift, Teft, Teift, or any of a dozen variations. The name in America seems to have originated with John Tefft or Teffe, as it appears in many early records. We are all descendants of John (1614 to about 1680), his brother William (who died without a male heir),  and John's sons, Joshua and Samuel, who settled in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.

Here are a few of the more common and uncommon variant spellings of the name:

Taafe, Taffe, Taf
Taft, Tafte
Taph
Teff, Teffe
Tefft, Teffts
Tiff, Tiffe
Tifft
Toff, Toft
Toph

According to the 1990 census, the spelling Tefft ranked 12,717th in frequency of occurance, followed by Tift, at 19,396th. Trailing these was Tifft at 39,010th. Teft was not found.
