SCORING SYSTEM

Interview

This 5-10 minute interview will be conducted panel style. This means that you will meet with all three judges at one time.  You will be asked 5 questions and will be scored on each question individually.  Each question is worth 10 points and your final score in this segment will be an average from the three judges scores.  The questions will deal with a range of topics such as recent events, problems facing teenagers, and general issues in society.  There are no right or wrong answers as these are opinion question.  You will be judged on your ability to respond while maintaining your composure and expressing your personality.  This is the judges first opportunity to meet you so be yourself.

Fitness

The fitness test will be conducted by our committee who have experience in this field. You will be ranked on your performance in a number of tests. These will include such things as wall sits, planks, pushups, sit-ups, and sprints.  It is a simple test designed to determine whether or not you have committed yourself to a healthy lifestyle. The test will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

Introduction

No points are awarded for this segment of the show however it is imperative to make a good impression. You have about 5-10 seconds at the opening of the show to introduce yourself to the audience.  In the opening number you will have the opportunity to step to the microphone and tell the audience a little about yourself.  This may include where you are from, your age, an interesting fact, or anything else you want the judges and audience to know about you.  Feel free to be creative.  Show off your personality!  Some examples of what you may like to say are:

“Hi, my name is Sarah Smith. I am a 15 and representing the town of Bay Roberts!”

“Proudly representing the town of Gander I am Sarah Smith.  I am a 15 year old athlete, musician, and an animal lover.”

“I am Sarah Smith from the town of Bishop’s Falls. When not here entertaining you, you can find me gardening at home with my parents.”

“From the town of Harbour Grace I am 15 year old Sarah Smith.  Enjoy the show!”

Casual Wear & Evening Wear

Here is your opportunity to show the judges your poise in front of the audience.  You will be scored on your ability to capture the attention of the audience through your confidence on stage.  Remember this is not about what you wear but how you wear it.   Your casual wear may be a fashion outfit and can consist of anything from a jean skirt and tank top to a business suit or cocktail dress.  Your evening wear should be a formal gown. We encourage mid calf to floor length; however any formal gown that you feel confident in is suitable for this part of the competition.  For contestants who feel they need extra help with their stage walk a coach will be present throughout the day to provide assistance.

Platform Presentation (Top 8, depending on number of contestants)

Take this opportunity to tell us about a cause that is close to your heart.  It can range from outmigration in our province to the importance of the Canadian Cancer Society.  You can choose any topic you would like.  You have 60 to 90 seconds to present your platform.  Any presentation shorter or longer will be penalized.  You are expected to present your platform without the use of visual cues, i.e. cue cards.  If this is a major issue for you and you do not feel comfortable presenting your platform without such aids please let us know in advance so we can work with you on these accommodations.  You will be given a score based on your public speaking ability, including appropriate tone, style, volume, and enthusiasm for the topic.

Top 4

Impromptu Question

If your preliminary total has allowed you to be placed in the Top 4 you will be asked an impromptu question worth 10%. This bonus will be added to your preliminary score.  You may take as much time as you need.  You will be given a score based on your ability to promptly answer the question and the quality of your answer.  These will all be opinion questions with no right or wrong answers that you will pick randomly.  In the following weeks we will send you a list of potential questions to help you prepare for this segment of the competition. The questions may not be exactly the same as the list we provide you with but they will be a great guide in preparing.

Tiebreakers

In the event that a tie exists when choosing the Top4 the contestants with the top interview scores will be chosen.  In the event that these scores are tied we will look at platform presentation, followed by your fitness score, evening wear, and casual wear.  Following the impromptu question if the scores are tied the previous tie breaking system will be used to determine the winners.
