Welcome to my page about Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome..... I have had PCOS for a period of 16 years even though I was only diagnosed after the birth of my son Zachary Sam was born and I started to put on weight. I have had two children through natural process even though I have PCOS and my husband has a low sperm count. So girls there is hope for everyone.  It took 16 months for us to conceive Emma Louise after we were married.  After she was born I was breastfeeding so my cycle did not return.  After stopping breastfeeding  my son was conceived. My daugther and my son are 20 months apart.  He was born full term and a proud hefty 9lb 3oz baby, which I now know was due to having PCOS. We tend to have bigger babies due to our sugar imbalance.  My only symptoms are weight gain, one hair on my chin and a few around my breasts, depression and sugar level problems.  I think we can all learn how to deal with this and I hope my site will help you all to do this.
This is a poem that I like and thought you might all enjoy

Happiness
May you have enough happiness
to keep you smiling
Enough trials to keep you strong
Enough sorrow to keep you human
Enough failure to keep you humble
Enough sucess to keep you eager
Enough friends to give you comfort
Enough enthusiasm to look forward
Enough faith to banish depression
Enough determination
to make each day
better than yesterday.
Ten points to keep on top of things

1. Always tell yourself you are worth it
2. You are a wonderful person
3. We are all people with a silly disorder that can be controlled
4. Help someone else during the day and you will feel better yourself
5. Big is beautiful
6. Find someone who appreciates your qualities and loves you dearly
7. Always keep positive
8. If you are down send an email to ten cysters, they may all email back with some perky thoughts
9. Have one day a week that you spoil yourself with a hair conditioning treatment and some relaxing time
10. Always know there is someone to help you and then you can help someone else.

Teena's desert ideas
If you need to have desert ladies just try some of these ideas

1. Low fat icecream with strawberries ( better to buy diabetic icecream)
2. Baked apple stuffed with dried fruit not dates they have a  high sugar content
3. Make an apple crumble  (stewed apples and top with some muesli and cook in oven for 10 mins)
4. Enjoy a jelly whip made with sugar free jelly and whipped together when set with low fat yoghurt
5. Wrap steamed apples and sultanas in filo pastry  and cook in oven for 10 mins serve with low fat icecream
Teena's exercise Tips
1. Start small and then increase when your energy builds up
2. Start by going to the corner shop to buy milk and bread and walk there and back
3. Put clothes basket on the ground so you have to bend to get them and hang them up
4. Put on music and dance around the room
5. Vacumn the house once a day this burns heaps of energy
6. When you hop out of bed in the morning do some stretches to wake up (only do this when you are fully awake and after you have had that morning cuppa)
7. Yoga is a great form of exercise good low impact exercise and is great for the mind as well
Here is another poem I thought you all might like

Friendship
Friendship is a priceless gift
that cant be bought or sold
But to have an understanding friend
is worth far more than gold.....
The golden chain of friendship
is a strong and blessed tie
Binding kindered hearts together
as the years go passing by..

Teena's diary notes and inspirational messages
Saturday August 17th 2002
Today I was inspired by a fellow cyster (Helen Quin aka Irish Cailin) to start my own web page and boy did I undertake a great task..   It has taken me most of the day...... But it is nearly finished now and I feel great I hope you all like it now it is done.
I will be putting some inspiration into this page now and I will still send a separate email  if you want me to.  My tip for today is to persevere even when you feel tired and worn out.
This is my perky day so how did all the girls go with their perky day are we all jolly.  I will continue to add diet tips and recipes to this site so it is updated regulary.  I will find a good picture of myself and my family to add onto this page when I find one that is current..... (and not too horrendous I am here to inspire not dissappoint you all)
Guess what I have lost 4.4.lbs since I started my new diet and exercise on Tuesday so I feel great and a whole lot better.  With the help of each other we can do it.
I read a quote that said "It doesnt matter how slow you go as long as you dont stop"
Bye for now ladies

Sunday 18th August 2002
Hi, how are we all doing today?  My quote for the day is
"Im not there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday. Anon
This is a great quote don't you all think.... We should never give up in whatever quest we undertake as we are sure to get there one day.  My point for today is to find a buddy and get her or him to help, with exercise and diet and just to be your bouncing board if you need one.  If you need to you can ask me anything you like as I will always try to answer your questions or just be a friend.
Remember Sunday is pamper day girls so get out the hair conditioner and the bath salts and relax in the bath for an hour with some soothing music on.  When you hop out treat yourself to a herbal tea (Chamomile) and put some bright toenail polish on those toes, and don't forget the fingers too.
Remember we are all here to help each other so call on a cyster today..
hugs for today

ps take the time to add your name to my quest book
                               What is Polcystic Ovarian Syndrome
Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome is when the ovary produces fluid filled sacs that when women dont ovulate turn into cysts.  But they also have other symptoms that effect the rest of the body.. These may be depression, weight gain, depression, facial and body hair, infertility and many other problems the main being a problem with sugar levels being either Insulin Resistant or Hypoclicemic.

Many women struggle to lose weight trying many different diets only to lose the weight and many put back on what they lost plus more.

Some experts say PCOS is genetic and starts by the adrenal androgen hypersecretion.  Others say it starts in the ovaries.  It is possible that it is several or all of these things in combination.

when women's weight increases this causes
*  an increase in the production of the hormone that suppresses ovulation and causes infertility
*  irregular periods
*  reduces the efficency of insulin
*  causes insulin resistance and hyperclicemia

Treatment
There are many different treatments  but I myself like the Hollistic approach, these may include lifestyle changes, vitamins, minerals and herbs.

The medical treatment usually addresses the symptoms and leaves the underlying problem ongoing.  Sometimes women need to undergo surgey and more invasive treatments.
I feel if natural things can help it is much better to try this approach first.   Most ladies find when they lose weight most or all symptoms go away and they can usually fall pregnant without the use of drugs... I myself find that when I fell pregnant with my two children I was 20 kilos lighter (40lbs) this was without the use of any fertility medication at all.   I had no symptoms and felt great..  I have since been trying for another child for the past 3-4 years but to no avail..

Alot of medical professionals are now using the BMI to measure weight loss
Aim for a body mass index of less than 25
BMI =  body weight in kilos
           body height in metres2

eg an adult with the body weight of 63 kg and a height of 1.7m
BMI = 63 divided by 1.7 squared = 21.8

<18 very underweight
18-20 underweight
20-25 healthy weight
25-30 overweight
30-40 obese
>40 severely obese

Some natural supplements that are used are
Chromium
B complex
Vitamin C and E
Beta Carotene
Magnesium
Zinc
Manganese

I would suggest before you undertake any natural medicines that you consult a Natural Ferility Specialist.  This being the same before you take any medications that the doctor prescribes.

Hi girls and welcome to another great day for us cysters........ the quote that came through today was
"Be like a postage stamp .......stick with it until you get there"
by Josh Billings
This is a great quote as we all need encouragement from time to time to keep going hey girls.. We are all here to help each other so if you need any support give me a yell and I will see if I can help.. How was our relaxation day today?  Regular Sunday treatments like these we will all start to look forward too hey... My nails are purple (I like that colour don't sue me). I had a great day and some great feedback from the page so keep adding your notes to the guestbook and I will look at ways to improve my site.  Remember girls if you need help just go to someone who can help and don't fall off that wagon, but if you do hop back on again and don't feel to bad about yourself.... We are all human after all.

Howdy girls...... How was our day today.... I am and have had a great day....
The quote for the day is
"The difficulties and struggles of today are but the price we must pay for accomplishments and victories of tommorrow..
by William J H Boltcher
This is true hey girls... it is hard sometimes to do the things we want to do, but in the end if we try really hard we will be rewarded won't we.... So the point is if  we persevere we will suceed... This may be in losing weight, getting pregnant or beating the symptoms of PCOS... remember girls there are heaps of us out there that are in the same boat so we should all help each other and we will beat this horrible but treatable syndrome...  Remember to help someone during the day and hopefully they will in turn be able to help someone else.

Hi girls how are we all doing today....I am great and the weather is great, it is raining here in sunny Qld. Australia.  I was just talking to a fellow cyster my friend Kerstin and she said a line that I thought I would pass onto all you fellow cysters.  She said "That we can all be happy to have great people around us even though we don't know each other by face" I think this  was a great thought, we have so many people that we do talk to on the message board and in the chat rooms... We do feel like we have so many friends now that I am honoured that I found this great web site of Kat's so I could meet you all.  The things we tell each other we would never tell anybody face to face but we tell our fellow cysters our deepest thoughts and feelings.  And you all know what they say if we open up to people we feel better so todays inspiration is to talk to a fellow cyster and tell her what your problems are and how you should deal with them..   This will help all of us to deal with things that may be bothering us because other cysters may have gone through this problem already and have an answer for you on how to deal with it.
So girls be happy to know we are not alone out there dealing with PCOS but we have many good friends in our cyberspace. So have a good day and pass this web page onto some others to enjoy if you enjoyed it.

The quote for today girls is
" Do not think of today's failures, but of the sucess that may come tomorrow.  You have set yourself a difficult task, but you will suceed if you persevere: and you will find joy in overcoming obstacles.  Remember no effort that we make to obtain something beautiful is lost.
by Helen Keller
This quote brought to mind a few ideas today.  The main one that struck to mind was that each and every day it can be a battle for us to lose weight but we will suceed.  It may be hard work but as the quote says anything beautiful and ladies we are beautiful the way we are.... is worthwhile......So girls if you want to lose weight and find it hard, find a buddy and get a walking partner and get going. But don't worry if at first you don't suceed, try and try again.  The other thought that sprung to mind was the ladies that are trying to fall pregnant.  We may not all have the chance to be a mother but there are many other qualities that we can offer. Dont think that children are the bee all and end all to any relationship.. You can offer so much to your relationship by just being you.  So don't be do disappointed there but then again if you persevere longer enough we may all get the chance to be a mum.
Hugs for you all

Hi girls how was your day today? I had a great day even though I am now back to cycle day 1 again but maybe next month will be the one.  The quote for today was great and I think we will all appreciate it alot.
"No matter how big and tough a problem may be, get rid of confusion by taking one little step toward the solution"
by George Nordenholt
This is a great quote for all of us to learn by.  Some of us have big problems with this horrible disorder but as the quote says get rid of the confusion and this is often depression. So work on that girls and try to be happy and hopefully you will be one step toward a solution.  I have found from talking to various girls that weight and depression are the worst symptoms of pcos.  But I feel with the help of all of us we can overcome both of these obstacles and do some good for ourselves.
Remember to help someone else and you will feel better yourself.  And to try and keep positive.  I know this can be hard but we can all do it.  With the help of others.  This is why I am here so if anyone needs someone to talk to, just give me a yell and I will see if I can help in any way.  Just to get things off your chest can sometimes help alot.  Remember have a good day tomorrow and to stay happy.  as Saturday is Chirpy Day........We will do something silly tomorrow OK.....
This is a good picture today girls.. We can make it to the top of that tree......
So be like a Koala and climb to your goal...
Remember to keep on going you will get there
Saturday 24th August 2002
Today we need to do something totally off base for us today.  Something that will make us all happy.  Saturdays are a great day to take the kids or just the hubby to the park and relax.  Pack yourself a hamper and off you go.  Every town has a park so noone is excused.  Get out the frisbe and ball and off you go.  Organise all your freinds and have a barbie and a cricket match or a game of touch footy.  Great fun and you burn off heaps of calories running around as well.
Todays quote is
"Start by doing what is necessary, then what's possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible"
Saint Francis of Assisi
this is great inspiration that we can all start with the most improtant things and then everything will fall into place so never give up girls.  We can beat this.
Remember have a great day...
This is a great idea but a bit adventurous, but you could start by doing something small first then work up to hang gliding
Sunday 25th August 2002
Hi girls this is our pamper day so remember the drill and get out all that pamper stuff and don't forget the nail polish and make it a bright colour today. Put on the kettle and have a cuppa then proceed with the rest of your pamper day.  I did four hours of gardening yesterday and I need today very much.  Hopefully it would have burnt up lots of calories so it was worth it and the yard is looking great.

Hi girls.... How are we all going today?   I am great, had a busy weekend gardening and they are looking great. Very pleased with myself but very sore as I used a rotary Hoe all weekend.  The quote for today is a chinese proverb
"The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones"
This is true in everything that we do, we have to start small and eventually the problem no matter how large starts to dissappear.  Most of our problems seem large but as the proverb says we all have to begin by carry small stones.  If we apply this to our weight, start by saying we have to lose 10lbs then another 10 lbs then another and before you know it you have reached your goal... And reward yourself along the way.  Every 10lbs get something you have always wanted. A new outfit or a new hair do or so forth let your imagination take control.  But be happy and don't set yourself unachievable goals.  As always you can talk to me if need be and I will try to help.  My diet is going well and I feel so much better.  Will talk again tomorrow girls

Good morning girls another great day before us.  This has been a great week started a new diet and exercise regimine and I am seeing a herbalist and feel great for the first time for a long time.  Have lost cms of both my hips and my waist and that makes me feel great too.  As we all know that our weight can go up and down according to what time of the month it is.
Todays Quote
" You can do what you want to do, accomplish what you want, to accomplish, attain any reasonable objectives....if you want it, if you will do it, you work to do it, over a sufficiently long period of time"
William E Holler
This is a great quote as I read it I thought of myself and how determined I can be to accomplish my goals.  My goals are
1. To lose weight
2. To have another baby
3. To learn to control my pcos symptoms
I feel after reading that quote that anything I put my mind to I will accomplish.  I think if we set our mind on anything if it is important to us we will be able to stick to it. I will be able to accomplish all my goals as I feel they are all important to me so here goes girls, I am on the right path to getting better.

Hi girls, how are we all going today? I am fine and doing well.   The diet is going well and the exercise is great I am so tired these days that I just want to fall asleep at night.  I am sleeping better and wake up most mornings with heaps of energy to start a new day.
The quote for today is
"Don't consider painful what is good for you"
by Euripes
So all this pain I feel from the exercise must be good for me hey.....lol.... But I do feel better about myself and I can see my waist taking shape again.  We have to do some hard yakka if we want to achieve something worthwhile.  The saying is no pain no gain... I will keep going and I hope now I am on track that my hormones will fall into place as well.  By the way we won our game last night..

Hey girls another great day has passed and we are on track for another great day I am now on cd 6 and everything is fine this is the first cycle I have ever finished early, only had the cycle for 5 days.  Must be all the new natural meds I am on.  My diet is going well and I feel ok.. Did 2 hours of mowing today and did some gardening as well.. The garden is looking great and the kilos are coming off from all the shovelling and turning of the dirt....
The quote today is
"Just say No!!!!!"
by Nancy Reagan
This sounds familiar hey....when we reach for that lolly or piece of white bread just say no.... we feel so bad after we have had something that is not on our diet that we punish ourselves for days over it.... We should just say it is ok for us to have a cheat every now and again.... Well enough of the lecture today.  Will have a good weekend as   I am going away for the weekend so I encourage you all to have a great weekend and have that pamper day on Sunday and have a Perky day on Saturday......See you all on Sunday night

Hiya girls I am on track for a good month I hope. The weight is till the same but I am losing cms of my hips and waist.  My Horomone specialist says that as women we can put on kilos at times in the month but to not get depressed as we can lose these again just as quick.
The quote for today is a good one
"Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are"
by Athelme Brillal - Savarian
I think  we all should keep a diary of what we eat so we can go back over it at the end of the week and see where we are going  wrong in our diet regimine.  I keep a record of everything, diet, exercise, meds, feelings, and anything that I think is related to myself.  I only weigh and measure myself now on a Wednesday so I dont get depressed everytime I jump on the scales.  I have been going good at the exercise and am playing  Basketball as well.  We won again last night.

This is a poem I was sent via email from my friend Ange (aka nutty gg)

Are we friend?
You told me once but I forgot,
So tell me now and tell me true
So I can say, I am here for you.
Of all the friends I've ever met,
You're the one I won't forget,
And if I die you do,
I'll go to heaven (I'm sure I will)
And wait for you

As it is National Friendship week show your friends how much you care

Today has been a good day and it was a good day for the diet too.  Practised basketball this afternoon and did well went home more tired than I do from a game.  But all exercise is good hey.  I had a pain in my right side today at about 5pm in the afternoon so hopefully that is a good sign that everything is working again.
Todays quote is
"One should eat to live, not live to eat"
by Moliere
This is a good one hey girls.  We sometimes eat for the sake of eating I know I am a victim of this and I am sure everyone would be at some time.  We would all comfort eat when we get down in the dumps.  I know I am a victim of this too.  But we have to change our way of thinking and try a different approach.  We live to eat, so we should choose better things to eat when we are down.  I now try something different and that is when I am down I go and pull weeds from the garden or lawn and I tell you it works to get the hunger bugs under control.
well had better go now

Cd 14
Ok I am feeling quite funny today.  Just a little weird and have been for the past couple of days now. I hope this means that finally my hormones are on the right track to getting better.  I think maybe they might be I actually feel more like a woman these days and was told on Saturday at a family party that I looked quite pretty.  Boy did that make me feel good.  Robin told me that i was looking good in my jeans as well and that she could notice the weight loss as well.  I haven't seen her since xmas last year and have lost about 8 kilos since then.  It makes you feel good when people notice the little things.
Todays quote is
"Health is not a condition of matter but of mind"
by Mary Baler Eddy
This one hit home for me as I am actually a fairly positive person, but some days I too get down in the dumps.  It helps if we set our mind on something positive and work towards that as our goal.  I think if we all try and get our mind into control everything else will fall into place. I find when I am happy I feel alot better about myself and the weight easily comes off.  But when I am down I get all bloated in the stomach and I seem to be a little tense as well, cant sleep at nights and the rest of the day seems to roll on by. Hey I should go now and try and do a little housework.

Today has been a good day as usual not much has upset me so I am in a good mood.  My hormones are acting up as I am still in a weird mood.  funny I guess, sort of light headed, I would call it a foggy brain.  I hope this is finally a good sign.  I had blood tests done last week and they all came back good, my hormone levels were fine and in the normal bracket so hopefully.........I go for another test on Thursday for progesterone to check those levels.  It will be good to see what is going on then to see how everything is panning out.
Todays quote is
"Preserving the health by no severe a rule is a wearisome malady"
by Francios de la Rochfoucauld
this one has me beat today.  Our health is the most important to us but sometimes it is very hard to try and maintain it. Looking after my health is the most important thing to me at the moment. I try very hard to stay on my diet so I will get better and if I stick to it, I know it will happen one day.
