PART SIX OF "LONG DISTANCE LOVE"

Untitled Normal Page

Matt Hardy got out of the Ford Explorer, along with his brother, that he had rented to get to the house show the WWF had scheduled for today. Unlike other days, Matt was in a good mood. He had been ever since the day he had seen Beyonce Knowles on television. Matt wasn't depressed anymore. He didn't feel like shit anymore. He was feeling great and he wasn't thinking about Amy at all. In fact, he had started talking to Amy again as a friend. Jeff couldn't have been more happy for his brother. He had been waiting for the old Matt Hardy to return and he was very thankful to see him back. However, he thought it was very awkward that his brother was absolutely crazy about Beyonce. They had never met in their lives and not only that, she was black. He couldn’t really see his brother going that way. It wasn’t that he had a problem with it, he had no problem at all with his brother dating a black female but some of their friends and family would. He didn't want them bothering Matt if somehow, Beyonce and Matt hooked up. Matt got his gym bag out of the trunk and Jeff went to get his bag but his brother stopped him.

"Don't worry, bro, I'll carry it for you." Matt happily said.

"O...kay." Jeff said as he shut the trunk.

Jeff shook his head as he and Matt walked in the arena humming to "Temptation" by Destiny's Child, that he was listening to on his CD Player. It seemed like Matt and his new Destiny's Child CDs were inseparable. He would listen to them most of the time. His Pearl Jam CDs had literally been deserted, which were the ones that Matt used to listen to most of the time. Jeff knew that his brother was acting weird before, but this was weirder than before. The boys walked into the arena, waving at the occasional "Hey, man." from their co-workers. They walked over to the board where the matches were listed.

"Oh, cool. Looks like we'll be wrestling those Canadian blondes again." Matt said.

"Matt." Jeff said as he slowly took the headphones off of Matt's ears.

"What's up?"

"Look, I'm very glad that you're all happy and everything but don't you think that you're acting a little...I don't know how to say this."

"Obsessive?" Matt interrupted.

"How did you know?"

"Jeff, I've known you for twenty-three years. I know what you're thinking, I know what you're gonna say before you say it. I know how I've been acting lately but I'm not complaining. This woman has really brought a lot of joy into my life. I'm over that depressed shit, I'm over Amy, I'm happier than I've ever been...because of Beyonce."

**********

Jeff shook his head at Matt and headed back to their dressing room. It’s not that he wasn’t happy for his brother, because he was. He had never seen his brother as depressed as he was when Amy had broken up with him, but Jeff also had to watch out for him. He had never met this woman before and who was to say that she liked him. Hell, who was to say that she even knew who he was.

Jeff’s head shot up as his brother walked inside, putting his CD player up and getting out his clothes for the night.

“Matt, we seriously need to talk.” Jeff said getting up and walking over to his brother.

“What about?” He asked as he sat down and took off his shoes.

“This Beyonce thing. Matt, I love you. You are one of the most important people in my life, I have always looked up to you, I have always respected you, and I have always wanted to be the best that I could be for you. You have always watched out for me and now I feel like I need to watch out for you.”

Matt looked at him, his eyes narrowing and his mouth pursing as he listened to his younger brother.

“Now hear me out before you say anything. You’ve just come from a bad break-up with Amy, you don’t need to rush into anything now. As far as I am concerned, this is just a rebound crush for you. You see this girl who is the complete opposite of Amy and you think that just because of that she can’t hurt you. Well, guess what, Matt? Any person you give control over your heart can hurt you. It doesn’t matter who they are or what they look like. Now get this silly idea out of your head and get it out of there now.” Jeff said standing with his hands on his hips, glaring down.

Matt sat there for a few minutes, mulling over the things his brother had just said to him. Part of himself said that Jeff was right, that he was crazy for even thinking half of the things he was, but something in his heart told him to take this chance and not to look back.

“Look Jeff, I know that I really freaked out on you whenever Amy broke up with me. I loved her with all my heart, part of me always will, but this is different. When I saw that beautiful face on the television screen singing, it was as if she was singing to me. It was as if she was looking right at me, telling me to get over myself. That’s what I plan on doing and somehow I know that it will happen.” He said getting up and pulling his shirt over his head.

Jeff shook his head and once more tried to make his brother see reason.

“Matt, she probably doesn’t even know you exist. I bet she’s never even watched WWF programming, much less seen a Twist of Fate.”

“I don’t care, somehow I will meet her and make her see that I am the man for her. If it takes the rest of my life, I will wait. You can’t rush true love anyway, you should know that.”

Jeff wracked his brain for something he could say to his brother, anything to make him forget about this. He said a quick prayer and asked for forgiveness before turning his brother around and getting up in his face.

“Yeah, well, what makes you think she’d wanna meet some country bred, hick, white boy like you?”

Matt looked at his brother, his eyes seemed to be breaking into a million pieces, but he didn’t let it show and managed to at least get in a parting shot before making his way out the door.

“Because Jeff, it’s our destiny. Nothing is going to change that.”

**********

Matt lay on his back in the hotel bed wearing nothing but boxers staring at the ceiling. He was blown away by what Jeff said. He had never known Jeff to be prejudice. He knew that their father had raised him better than that. He never knew that it was so wrong to like a black female. If the love he felt was real and if he was happy, that should've been all that mattered but Matt was wrong. Matt sat up and looked at Jeff who appeared to be sleeping. He needed to talk to him. Matt slowly got up out of the bed.

"Don't waste your time. I'm awake." Jeff said on his bed looking at ceiling himself.

Matt sighed and climbed back into the warm and comfortable bed.

"Look, Jeff, is it that bad for me to like Beyonce?"

"No, I was just going through my brain madly to find something to say to you so that you would forget about her. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it."

"Then what's the problem, Jeff?"

"A lot of things. You fall in love too easily, man. Don't you know that?"

"Actually, no. I haven't had tons of girlfriends like you have. I've only had a few so I try to cherrish the very few ones that I do get."

"But Matt, look at all the shit you went through when Amy dumped you. You loved her hard and you're loving a woman who probably doesn't even know you exist hard too. I just don't want your heart to be broken again. Somebody already broke your heart."

"I know, I'm aware of that but something tells me that she's different. Beyonce could be the one."

"Matt, what are the chances of a busy white wrestler and a beautiful single black entertainer getting together?"

"Jeff, get to the point. I don't get where you're coming from."

"Long distance relationships! It never works out. I thought you would have learned that from the things you went through with Amy but I guess not. You and Beyonce, if you actually hooked up, would never see each other. I mean, NEVER. That girl is busy as hell and you are too. The only communication you two would have is a telephone and a mailbox. A relationship can't survive like that."

"Yes, it can. For Beyonce, I'm willing to try. I have to get that woman in my life, Jeff, if it's the last thing I do. I love her."

"Just promise me that you'll be careful and that you won't fall in love so hard."

"I'll try. I really will. I appreciate your concern but this is just something I wanna do, okay?"

"Fine, fine. I'll leave you alone then, bro."

"Thanks for understanding, Jeff." Matt and Jeff did their special handshake before Jeff drifted off to sleep.

Matt stared at the ceiling again with Beyonce haunting his mind yet again. He loved her so much. He just a feeling that they were meant to be and he was determined to prove all the people who thought he was crazy wrong. A song by Destiny's Child came into his mind and he started singing it to himself before he finally drifted off to sleep.

Killing time
Waiting on you
What should I do
I'll be sitting here waiting
