Evil Dead
There's nothing more safe than five co-ed's driving to an old abandoned cabin in the remote wilderness for a romantic weedend.

RIGHT!

That is the premise for most traditional horror flicks.  So what made Evil Dead stand out?  The fact that they had a very limited budget, and still managed to have more gore than all the Friday the 13th movies COMBINED!  Even though it was clay effects, it still sent chills through the spines of viewers.  Because these baddies were dead, and they definitely weren't cuddly.  One by one the co-ed's were possessed by this evil force that lived in the woods and dark places.

It was their own stupid fault though, seeing as how they played the translation that released this evil.  You'd think any tape recording about a book with a
HUMAN FACE on the cover would spell BAD!  But noooo...they must go to a Community College (this portion of the review is not meant to offend any people attending community colleges)!.

However, we have a hero.  Someone who will save the day and rescue the co-eds.  Now if we can only get him out of the corner he's hiding in.  There he is...ladies and gentlemen we give you Ash.  This guy wants nothing more for those nasty Evil Dead to stop tormenting him.  Oh yeah, and for his girlfriend, Linda, to put out a little bit.  Tell you what, Ash, you can kiss her all you want when she's spewing green puss from every orifice of her body.

Soon, Ash is the only co-ed left untouched by the evil.  The evil figures that if they possess him they won't have anyone to mess around with.  They want to see just how far they can push this wuss.

In the end, Ash defeats the evil by burning the Necromicon ex Mortes.  Then, with the sun just starting to come up he leaves the cabin.  Safe...right?  Wrong.  The last scene is Ash turning toward the camera rushing toward him.  Ash screams his head off, and the scene cuts to black and nice little dittly from the thirties is played.

Evil Dead was disgusting to sit through.  However, it was also captivation.  It wasn't so repulsive as to make people leave their seats or vomit in the aisles.  But it did give people a hankering for more.  They wanted to know what happened to Ash?  What was this evil?  And why would anyone in their right mind make a book cover out of human flesh?
