St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery--Ingonish Beach

The United Church (formerly the Bethel) Cemetery

This cemetery is located down a path on the ocean side of the Cabot Trail between Ingonish United and St. John's Anglican Churches. It is on the grounds formerly occupied by the Old Bethel Church (part of the foundation remains in the north east corner). The Bethel was a  place of worship for Methodists, Church of England and Presbyterians.  As the structure fell into disrepair; the Methodists built their own church in 1885 (close to the existing United Church). At the time of Church Union in 1925, this edifice became  the place of worship for the United Church congregation. The cemetery continues to be used by the United Church congregation. St. John's Cemetery.

This cemetery is located at St. John's Anglican Church which in 1889 was built as a Union Church by the Presbyterian and Church of England (now known as Anglican) congregations. The churchyard has had an interstering history in that the Anglicans have used the property to the east of the Church as their burial grounds and the Presbyterians used the property to the west for that purpose.  More information about Ingonish Churches can be found in "Keep to the Light: a history of St. John's and Its People" written by Fred Williams in 1992 to commemorate St. John's 100th Anniversary.
