Bulls move on to regional semis

SARASOTA - A thump and a ping helped Bloomingdale hold onto a 2-0 victory against Sarasota Riverview in the Class 4A-Region 2 quarterfinals at the Ram Bowl.

Goals by Tara Escribano and Lyndrea Sutherland led the Bulls' (17-2-4) offense while the back four played a solid game defensively, with a little help from the post.

With Bloomingdale ahead 1-0 on Escribano's 17th minute goal, the goalkeepers best friend made a familiar sound as Chelsey Edwards' shot from inside the penalty box caromed off the left post to preserve Bloomingdale's lead. Less than three minutes later Sutherland headed in Megan Snaider's cross to cap the scoring.

The Bulls will travel to Wellington, a 6-1 winner against Melbourne, for Tuesday's region semifinals.

``We've been there before in tight games like this so we have had some experience holding on to close games,'' Bloomingdale coach Sue Peet said. ``We were able to string some passes together and play some possession, but their counter attack almost got us a couple of times.''

Class 3A-Region 3: At Tampa, King got a goal in the 44th minute and made it hold up, defeating East Lake 1-0 at Bill Stewart Stadium.

Center midfielder Kelly Owen delivered the knockout blow for King (18-3-2), looping a shot over the head of Eagles' goalkeeper Jackie Justiniano early in the second half.

From there the King defense was able to avoid giving up a goal to a lively East Lake (15-5-1) attack in a physical game.

The Eagles best chance came in the 48th minute when Krista Petitt had a one-on-one with King keeper Martha Walker but missed wide right.

Class 4A-Region 2: At Palm Harbor, a 75th-minute free kick by Fort Myers' Jennifer Craig found the net and ended Palm Harbor's quest for a third consecutive state title Tuesday night, as the Hurricanes fell 1-0.

``We lost on a lucky goal,'' said Palm Harbor coach Holly Freeman. ``But I'm very proud of my 10 seniors, who accomplished so much as a group since they were freshmen. They came in as babies and will graduate as women.''

The Hurricanes had a few good opportunities to equalize late, but couldn't beat Green Wave goalkeeper Natalie Mayer, who snared several loose balls in the box.

In the first half, Palm Harbor dominated play with a strong defense and dangerous runs on the left wing by Gabby Farkasfalvy.

Class 2A-Region 2: At Zephyrhills, Lecanto goalkeeper Trisha Chenowith was peppered with 34 shots, but stood tall leading Lecanto (17-4-2) to a 2-1 Class 2A-Region 2 win against Zephyrhills (14-5-6).

Chenowith, who suffered a concussion in the Panthers' season finale when she was kicked in the head, was released to play before the game.

``I was just going to go out and play my best and if we win, we win,'' Chenowith said. ``It had to come from the heart. They gave us a run for our money, but we earned this.''

Lecanto only had 10 shots, but made the most of their opportunities. Dani Sowell had a goal and an assist and Amber Gidden scored the game-winner in the 50th minute.

Zephyrhills forward Renee Yonkoff fed an assist to Tara Rosensweig in the 42nd minute to tie the game at one.

``We couldn't finish in the back of the net,'' Zephyrhills coach Janet Heyman said. ``Their keeper made some excellent saves.''

Class 2A-Region 3: At Lakeland, Tampa Catholic (9-2-1) advanced to the Class 2A regional semifinals with a 1-0 victory against Lake Gibson (13-7-3) in their quarterfinal match at Virgil Ramage Stadium.

Tampa Catholic will play at Lakewood in Tuesday's semifinals.

Catherine MacMillan scored the Crusaders' only goal in the 32nd minute.

MacMillan's winning kick came after she was fouled 25 yards from the Lake Gibson goal. The sophomore lofted the shot in over the outstretched arms of Braves goalkeeper Margret Horn.

``I was aiming high to try to go over her head,'' MacMillan said.

Class 2A-Region 3: At Gibsonton, East Bay forward Alyse Migliaro and midfielder Shawna Kramer scored two goals apiece to lead the Indians to their first state playoff victory, 4-1 against Bartow, at E.G. Simmons Field. East Bay will host Tarpon Springs on Tuesday in the semifinals.

Migliaro scored the first goal of the game on a free kick in the 24th minute and assisted on Kramer's goal, scored off a throw-in, in the 30th minute.

Katherine Bentley cut the lead in half in the 37th minute, but East Bay's defense and midfield did an excellent job of clearing the ball all game. The Indians allowed only five shots on goal and East Bay coach Claudine Sosa was pleased with their performance.

Class A-Region 2: At Tampa, midway through the first half, St. Petersburg Catholic's Andrea Bolger went out with a left knee injury. As she left the field, so too did the Barons' spirit.

Only a matter of seconds after Bolger exited, Berkeley Prep's Cally Stolbach punched in a goal from 25 feet out en route to a 5-0 Buccaneers win at Newman Stadium. Stolbach would add another goal and Erin Mueller added two others to help Berkeley Prep advance to next Tuesday's semifinals.
